Advertising Breaking Into Popular Culture

Recommended Posts

Where an advert is so good or so prevalent that it becomes part of popular culture. Money very well spent for the advertiser (usually).

Not restricting it to music but the first examples that come to mind are:

I want my MTV, sampled on Money for Nothing (Dire Straits).

Miller Time, opening phrase of Screen Kiss by Thomas Dolby

Bound to be loads more; best examples?

Ridley Scott's '1984' Macintosh ad often gets referred to as the most influential ad of our times. It instantly established Apple as the cool technology brand and, allegedly, inspired a generation of geek entrepreneurs and consumers

I recall being tickled at the time by McEwans shamelessly, and with significant success, ripping off the Apple ad completely...

Scottish lager would never be the same again

If Calsberg did .....

...has made it into common language. I even saw it on a presentation at work last week. Doesn't make me want to drink Carlsberg though.

There used to be a brilliant sign at the Northampton railway station (where the Carlsberg brewery is) that said 'Northampton.... Probably'.

I used to like the "Courage Best" adverts with Chaz'n'Dave.

Also the "Cadbury Smash" aliens.
