  • Cherie Blair launched Mee Healthcare with American Gail Lese in 2011

  • Cherie Blair's bid to match her husband's riches met with disaster yesterday when her chain of healthcare shops went bust.
  • Eleven stores have closed with the loss of dozens of jobs.

Staff told bosses to 'rot in hell' during a heated conference call announcing the business was going into liquidation.

It is a massive setback for Mrs Blair, who launched Mee Healthcare with her American business partner Gail Lese in 2011 to exploit reforms opening up the NHS to private competition.

Mrs Blair, 60, a lifelong socialist, has always rejected claims that she was cashing in on NHS privatisation – even though Mee Healthcare was funded via an investment company in the tax haven of the Cayman Islands.

They announced bold plans to open 100 clinics in shopping centres and supermarkets offering a 'one-stop shop' for all healthcare needs from seeing a doctor to eye tests, dentistry, massage, physiotherapy, reflexology and chiropody.

But four years on only 11 stores had opened, huge losses were racked up, and now the whole chain has collapsed.

Staff were told the news in a conference call at 4pm on Thursday.

A letter to employees said: 'In the last week, the management team has been in discussions with potential purchasers of the business. However these discussions have not achieved a sale of the business.

'As a result, the management team has reached the difficult decision, based on professional advice, for Mee Healthcare to cease trading with immediate effect. For the avoidance of doubt, your current employment is terminated with immediate effect.'

No figures given for losses and surprising the Wail has chosen not to tell us how much the Blair's property empire is worth.

I wonder if they borrowed any money from RBS or JP Morgan?

Sadly I suspect her personal sacrifice will be limited to a loss of face.

Actually, I doubt she has such a capacity for self reflection.

I was about to say, she's not exactly a good advert for the facial's is she?

‘Mee Healthcare provides state-of-the-art, one-stop clinics for health and wellness services and products. This represents a new approach to healthcare delivery, enabling customers to benefit from a range of services at affordable prices including hearing, vision, dental and health checks.

I couldn't see it working. Dentists, Opticians, Optometrists, and Doctors in one clinic (and don't forget the receptionists and the auxiliary staff) - they're not on minimum wage, zero hours contracts you know. No wonder it didn't work out.

sorry for people that have lost their jobs as a result, hope they get treated properly by the owners

for Mrs Blair I need to send out a call. Will the owner of the world's smallest violin please lend it to me for half a second?

Cherie Blair and her business partner had hoped to open 100 health clinics. Instead the venture is in liquidation with customers and staff owed money

Oh dear...

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/tony-blair/11688937/Cherie-Blairs-health-business-goes-spectacularly-wrong-as-company-goes-bust.html

Even out of office the Blairs capacity to f*ck up/screw with peoples livelihoods continues (in this case unpaid staff salaries).

At her stage in life why did she even bother? She has a very successful career, makes more than enough dosh to keep herself in the manner she has become accustomed to - never mind what her hubby might bring in.

Of course being a, presumably, silent partner she can tell herself all the hardship heaped upon those afflicted had nothing to do with her. I'll bet not once will the thought cross her mind "I should have taken a more active interest...."

The brains behind this business venture no doubt only wanted Cherie for her cash and her fame, to help add at least some cachet of respectability to the business.

Cherie was likely so stupid and infected with greed and dreams of becoming a rich and successful businesswoman that she was the only person who couldn't see that.

I don't believe in god, but with people like her and her husband I REALLY hope there is one so she can burn in the pit of hell for a thousand years.

It sounds like it was an attempt to get in at the ground floor to take advantage of any possible privatisation changes to the NHS by the Conservatives. Note there's an American connection.

If so it would be typical rank hypocrisy considering all the Labour words during NuLabour's days and afterwards about saving the NHS etc etc etc.
