Defeated former shadow chancellor Ed Balls is set to end speculation over his next move outside politics – by taking up a special teaching position in the US, it was claimed today.

Mr Balls, who was ousted from Parliament at the last election, is understood to have agreed to become a part-time lecturer at Harvard University.

The move clears the way for his wife Yvette Cooper to pursue her leadership bid without constant questions over her husband's political ambitions.

It is also in stark contrast to former Labour leader Ed Miliband who has been accused of hanging around Parliament 'like an awkward relative at a funeral' following last month's disastrous election defeat.

The former Labour leader has made a high profile return to the Commons - regularly taking his seat on the backbenches and intervening on debates.

Mr Balls's decision ends speculation that he could make a quick return to front-line politics by standing in a by-election.

He is not the first Labour politician to take up a teaching post at Harvard.

Former Prime Minister Tony Blair lectured at the elite university after standing down from Parliament. Ed Miliband also taught at the Boston-based institution before becoming an MP.

Mr Balls is set to join the university this autumn, teaching in the economics department, according to the Evening Standard.

It is Friday and this is pure comedy gold!!!

I wonder how he will answer the question define the national debt and national deficit, something he always had a problem with.

It appears being able to talk bu11sh1t qualifies you to teach economics.

Cut the guy a bit of slack. He's probably one of the most economically literate people to have served in a shadow cabinet. That said, I don't rate his brand of economics particularly highly but he's well qualified to teach at Harvard as is pretty clear from his curriculum vitae.

Now if George Osborne were to take up a post at Harvard, then that really would be funny!

I'd say that's more true of politics than economics.

Balls lost his seat.

Miliband did not. That's probably why he's still "hanging around" - honestly who writes this shite

Yes

And it's millibands job as an MP to engage in parliament, I agree

Also, though I dislike Balls, and disagree with his opinions, he's still a clever bloke, and given his experience at the high end of government then it's reasonable he take up a teaching post

Normally you'd expect a Harvard lecturer to have a doctorate and a fair amount of research under his belt, not having once banged Stephanie Flanders in a student dorm.

Still nothing succeeds like failure. Trebles all round.

...who needs qualifications to lecture when you can show the scars of battle to your classes....
