Charles Cross, Jack The Ripper?

Recommended Posts

Watched the documentary last night and tbh the evidence seem pretty strong.

(1) Cross, the car man is first to find the second victim on Buck's Row in 1888. One of the puzzles about Buck's Row is that the Ripper disappears from a closed street when police are patrolling either side.

(2) When the second witness arrives on Buck's Row, Cross has hastily disguised it as a murder, the only victim that was not exposed sexually, he dissuades witness two from examining the body and wants to get a policeman.

(3) Cross lies to the policeman, having found one; gives a false name, says another policeman is attending (there isn't yet) and pretends both witnesses came on the body about the same time.

(when the policeman finds the body, perchance another policeman is there and covers Cross' lie)

(4) There are two routes to Pickford's where Cross starts work at 4 each morning from his house...all the first four victims are found on those two routes. the routes are of exact distance and Cross may have varied his route to work. the timing of the killings is during Cross' commute time.

(5) The last two victims were on route between Cross' home and his mother's house. the killings took place on a Saturday night when Cross had been visiting his mother and not working the next day which was a Sunday.

(6) He worked as a meat courier and had a blooded apron as part of the job.

(7) His wife had left him in June 1888, two months before the first murder on 7th August.

It's on again tonight at eight on channel 5 +24.

I think I saw that documentary about six months ago - if it's the same one - and it did seem quite compelling.

I did a little digging around on the internet afterwards and IIRC there was some controversy over his identity and it was a weighty topic of discussion on a "Jack the Ripper" website I came across.

Part of the fascination of the Whitechapel murders was the sinister locations and narrow streets.

This shows the locations as they were in 1888, which then morph into the 21 st century without moving the camera angle. Very well done......

The Burkhaed-up Muslim woman emerging from around the corner at the end of the morph in location 3 is a perfect metaphor for London (then and now).
