Turned Out Nice Again

Biographies Of Great Men On Wikipedia

One of the real pleasures of the interWeb. Recent discoveries:

Jack London - What a life! albeit cut short (40) as a result of alcoholism.

Humble origins. Father an Astrologer, mother a Spiritualist.

Joined the Califormia Gold Rush.

Decided to make something of himself as a writer just as the short story magazine market started to open up. Became one of the first World literary superstars. Documented his struggle in his novel 'Martin Eden'.

Plagiarized freely -- for which sued several times.

War correspondent.

Bohemian Grove honorary member. Socialist. Animal Activist. Atheist.

Made a sh1tload of money which he used to found a palatial estate in California.

Had a marriage of convenience for the purpose of begetting 2 children while shagging freely on the side.

Oswald Mosley - another Socialist. Fabian. Almost everything I thought I knew about him was wrong.

How trustworthy is the information in Wikipedia? Just asking.

I find it very good to be honest. I read an awful lot of articles on wikipedia as I enjoy going off on tangents following links. If you wish to find out about amazing people - long forgotten - it is an amazing resource.

Unfortunately, and this appears to be a very recent thing, celebs are now invading wikipedia with 'wonderful' and 'glowing' bios of them appearing - no doubt these are written by themselves or their PR people. There has been a bit of an outcry about this in recent months - wasn't there a Tory MP who had been editing his own bio? Or was that a Labour one?

However, the bios are usually then added to and/or changed to be more honest. For example, a celeb might have a glowing bio created but it can easily backfire on them as people add info about any sexual shenanigans or criminal activities. That is the beauty of wikipedia - a global army of authors to protect its honesty.

I use it a lot. Though some of the more controversial entries are quite often taken down.

Yep, that is like fuzzy nipples... Bit of a problem with the Yanks... they make a big thing about free speech... but often it turns out that it is free speech as long as it coincides with their world view of things. I am being niggly here though - their views on freedom are more honest and more closely aligned with our own than, say, Soviet Communism, Islam, etc, etc. :D

Are you suggesting grant Shapps wiki entry may have been doctored?

Fabian Society......an intersting read (h/t to the OP )

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fabian_Society

The Fabians also favoured the nationalisation of land rent, believing that rents collected by landowners were unearned, an idea which drew heavily from the work of American economist Henry George.

It seems that HPC'ers idea of 'Great Men' are lunatic psychopaths who love war, who fortunately happened to be on our side.

Not all, mine was the best in the world at running away.
