Labour Leadership Frontrunner Calls For Eu Referendum In 2016

Andy Burnham, frontrunner to become leader of the opposition Labour Party, threw his weight behind the idea of a referendum on the country's EU membership, and said he would demand it took place in 2016 if he becomes party leader.

Burnham's pledge to back a referendum is a break with the left-leaning Labour Party's existing stance, which has been to only back a referendum if there was a substantial further shift of powers from London to Brussels.

He said the vote was needed in 2016, earlier than the Conservative government's current timetable for 2017, to clear up uncertainty for British business, as he launched a leadership campaign with a series of interviews on Sunday.

"Under my leadership the Labour party will not be a grudging presence on that stage. We will now embrace (the referendum.) It should be brought forward to 2016," Burnham told the Observer newspaper on Sunday.

Says it all about the state of politics in this country Milipede stated thou shall not have a referendum on Europe, now he's gone it's a complete about face by senior people. All quite happy to be a drone when it suits and offer no opinion. However even greater irony is that Labour gave away more powers to Europe without consulting the people, obviously because we are all too dumb to have an opinion.

Although it appears Labour hired cretins to run it's campaign.

Couldn't make it up could you. The MSM are obsessive about Farage and the fact the party wants him as a leader and yet the supposed oppostion does a complete U turn on a major issue and no one bats an eyelid

Apparently Liz Kendall and Mary Creagh two other Labour leadership contenders have also done a U-turn on the eu referendum.

Labour leadership hopefuls today queued up to back David Cameron’s EU referendum in a major break from the past.

Would-be leaders Andy Burnham, Liz Kendall and Mary Creagh all said they no longer oppose an In/Out poll after voters endorsed the PM’s plan at the general election.

Mr Burnham said the crunch vote should be held next summer to end the uncertainty for business.

“The country has voted now for an EU referendum,” he said. “We will now embrace it. It should be brought forward to 2016.”

It's just another facet of the LibLabCon party.

Now they can all "come together" with Cameron with lots of scare stories similar to their coordinated campaign on the Scottish independence vote.

I think it was Liz Kendall who said it first and her position was quickly taken up by Andy Burnham.

Did it really have to take an election defeat for Labour to figure out not having a referendum was a bad idea?

If he gets elected by the LP National Exec, the Labour Party will be committing collective suicide

Who do you see as effective opposition with Labour in potentially such a bad state?
