Michael Portillo On Trident Replacement

Recommended Posts

Just before the election I heard him in a interview say its madness that the UK would consider to pay out for a Trident replacement as we don't really have a viable Army now, let alone an Air force or Navy! Also that it is hardly an independent deterrent.

A bit weird hearing an ex Conservative MP and ex Secretary of State for Defence saying that?

In other news North Korea now has a nuclear missile sub which has successfully launched a nuclear capable missile.

Im not sure why not having a big army means you shouldnt have nukes.

Regardless of whether you have a hundred million soldiers like china or barely a couple of million like israel (and usually a lot less) the deterrent factor is still there.

I take it trident is not our only nuke type though...lib dem guy a month back was saying he didnt want to replace trident as we dont have enough subs to make it useful, but wanted to keep our other nukes.

I thought we ditched everything else back when we got rid of the Vulcan bombers. So submarine launched missiles only, ie Trident.

Could be wrong though!

Small tactical nukes carried by Tornado bombers but the delivery system is very much out of date

Nuclear depth charges but we don't have the ships to carry them!

I think one of Portillos points was that Britains nuclear deterrence isn't independent like the French is.
