Cyber Bullying Study

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Firstly, my sincerest apologies if research is not allowed to be posted - I did read the forum rules but couldn't see anything saying otherwise.

I am looking for participants to take part in a short 15-20 minute survey about cyber bullying, online experiences and digital technology. Anybody can participate. The survey is being run by Dr Betts and myself from Nottingham Trent University, Division of Psychology. It has received full ethical approval from the Business, Law and Social Science's College Research Ethics Committee at Nottingham Trent University.

Further details about the study are provided on the first page of the link, but if you have any questions please PM me or contact Dr Betts using the contact details provided at the beginning and end of the survey.

Many thanks in advance to those who complete the study, it is much appreciated.

Here is the link: http://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/2122941/Cyber-Experiences

I am also happy for this thread to be used generally as a discussion about cyber bullying and risks associated with using the internet/digital technology.

Hmmm, someone claiming to be a researcher having no interest in HPC joins just to post this (a link with some padding, not a bona-fide discussion)? How widely has this been spammed?

If this survey should ever generate numbers that masquerade as statistics, we shall know instantly that they're bogus.

Hello,

Thank you for your queries - I promise this survey is for research is for survey purposes only.

The reason I have joined the forum to post the research survey is because we are trying to get a large sample, which adequately represents all those that use the internet (as best as possible).

The results will only be used for research purposes and will not be sold on, or used for any monetary gain.

You can be as rude as you like on the Internet, and no-one will come up through your toilet with a machete. Although I might.

You should post the survey on Mumsnet. General sequence of bullying events there is:

1. Woman posts that husband has higher sex drive than she does

2. Militant MN division start shouting that he's a rapist, emotional abuser and probably a paedo

3. OP defends husband

4. Militant MN division advise reporting husband to police, employer, GP, and local schools and vicar

5. OP gets upset

6. Militant MN division start shouting at the OP "when are you going to wake up and leave the rapey *******?"

7. Militant MN division get angry the OP disappeared, blame it on emotionally abusive rapist husband probably killing her.

Alternatively:

1. Woman posts that husband has lower sex drive than she does

2. Militant MN division start shouting that he's gay, impotent and/or having an affair. And probably a paedo

3. OP defends husband

4. Militant MN division advise reporting husband to friends, family, and anyone else who will listen

5. OP gets upset

6. Militant MN division start shouting at the OP "when are you going to wake up and leave the soft-cocked *******?"

7. Militant MN division get angry the OP disappeared, probably committed suicide as a result of emotionally abusive husband failing to meet her sexual needs.

You made the mistake of coming here, where you get:

1. OP posts that wife wants sex less often than he does

2. Posters reply "That's why God invented porn"

3. OP agrees

4. Everybody happy

You need to look in the relationships forum.

On second thoughts, don't. I still have PTSD.

I did try completing the survey. Missed one of the answers and pressed next then it crashed. Eventually returned me to the starting screen.

You need to improve it or you might get some insulting replies...

Hello, I am really sorry that the survey crashed. Unfortunately we are rather limited in the options we have for building and hosting the survey. Survey gizmo usually has little problems, but I will report the issue to them. Thank you to all who completed.

Are you serious about doing a survey? I'm not! What will it achieve, and why have you chosen this "place"?

I'm pretty sure the majority of HPC opinion would be at odds with (whatever) the aim of the study.

That we don't complete it will probably be doing the OP a huge favour when they come to write their thesis..

Evelyn,

Welcome to the forum (in case you are planning to hang around).

As a genuine question, aren't you concerned that rather than being representative the vast majority of respondents will actually be entirely self selecting?

I left negative feedback, for someone selling a car on ebay, and they threatened to come round and 'sort me owt'. I certainly left a goodly pile of Haynes workshop manuals stacked on the loo that night.

... which is the primary reason we already know that any "statistics" arising from this will necessarily be utterly bogus.

But to give the benefit of the doubt, it's rarely the students themselves who put forward bogus claims. It's journos who extrapolate in support of an Agenda. And my gut feeling is that HPC is unlikely to bias the study towards the usual (bbc-flavour) Agenda.
