A new book

On housing he says (I paraphrase) German housing is about the same cost in real terms as it was 35 years ago.

This is because new houses in an area mean more taxes so German councils give planning permission to more people.

In the UK this is not true so house prices and rents have rocketed.

What do people think?

Never work here. If taxation was distributed on a local basis half the north would be uninhabited. (like much of east and rural germany!)

Which may be no bad thing...but people would never go for it. Places like Burnley will still be zombie towns in 50 years.
