  • Tony Blair has claimed his personal wealth does not make him 'super-rich'
  • In an interview, he said his earnings pay for 'infrastructure' around him
  • Blair: 'I could not do what I do unless I was also able to generate income'
  • He earns millions of pounds a year from consultancy and public speaking

Tony Blair was branded 'out of touch' last night after claiming that he is 'absolutely not' in 'the league of the super-rich'.

The former prime minister, who entered the general election fray for Labour this week, spoke about his multi-million pound earnings in an interview with Newsweek magazine.

He also suggested he has left British politics behind, declaring that he has 'done British' and is now more interested in working at a 'global level'.

Claiming the money he generates pays for the 'infrastructure' around him, Mr Blair said: 'I could not do what I do unless I was also able to generate income.

'Am I better off than most people? Yeah, I'm very lucky. Am I in the league of the super-rich? Absolutely not, though you will have to make up your own mind about that.'

Mr Blair earns millions of pounds a year from his consultancy roles and charges fees of £250,000 for public speaking.

Well he definitely isn't in the super rich league, however he's certainly better off than the majority of people and now he's helping the world!

Perhaps he should say although I am worth £10 million in terms of housing that is only the same as £800k before some idiot caused massive HPI in 1997-2007.

What do people think?

I recall that Cherie Blair has recently bought fourteen flats in Stockport, and ten in another area. The rental returns are better in poor areas apparently.

The Blairs now own 31 homes.....

The Wilsons would be better off trying to sell their portfolio to the Blairs than waiting for a Russian oligarch.

I guess in a couple of hundred years time when people are renting from the inherited wealth descendents of Blair it may be said that the Blairs made their money originally from waging battles.

Thats a new one...infrastructure!

So long as you can find stuff to spend your money on, you're not rich!

In my experience, Socialists ALWAYs seem to think richer means anyone with more money than them...even if next year they have more money than they had the previous year and would by their own terms be called 'rich'

NEVER met a socialist who has admitted being rich, even if they own million pound houses, drive range rovers...

Reminds me of the old trade union boss who was asked if it wasn't a little bit inappropriate that he drove a Rolls Royce. 'Ah,' he replied, 'but I want everyone to be able to drive a Rolls Royce.'

So are the Blairs leveraging up a Wilsons-style BTL empire? Meaning they could lose it all in the event of an HPC?

Do we still pay for his security ?

Guards at the country retreat, London town house etc

or has he taken that generously within his infrastructure bill ?

I am quite happy as a tax payer to pay for his security. Providing I can stipulate that to prove they are peaceful all the guards are Muslims.

Possibly not as financially secure as his net worth would suggest.

He's basically adopted a lifestyle which involves high security, a legion of staff, posh London addresses, kids that require mansions themselves before they have earned a bean etc. etc.

He will never just be able to just pop down to Sainsburys with his wife (I mention that because that's precisely what Ken Clark does in my local area, a rough part too)

But then I guess Socialists are different, and being a Gordon Brown or Tony Blair means you are not just a normal individual anymore, you are some God that destroyed the economy.
