A Company Can Hire Almost A Dozen Bulgarians For The Cost Of One Dane

Recommended Posts

The average cost of employing a worker in Bulgaria runs at just €3.80 ($4.11) per hour, less than a tenth of the cost in Denmark, according torecently released data (pdf) from the EU’s statistics agency.

Of course, this crude comparison doesn’t take into account the vastly different cost of living in these countries nor the relative industriousness of their workforces. But it is a telling illustration of the huge disparities in the development of economies across the EU, and how far from a true “United States of Europe” the bloc remains.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/in-sight/wp/2014/11/10/the-steep-decline-of-bulgarias-population-in-the-post-soviet-era/

I wonder what happened to all those Brits tempted to invest inth Bulgarian property dream a decade ago

This is not true and is left wing propaganda put out to harm the Tories chance of getting an outright majority in the forthcoming election.

Everybody knows that you could get 12 Danes (on zero hours contracts) for the price of 12 Bulgarians (on an 80 hour week)...and whats the difference?...nothing, they are both in full-time employment...well according to Dave anyway.

True. Its why there has been a massive exodus of western europeans to eastern europe. Same wages and cheaper housing.

Thats what must have happened.

Nice to see the UK below the EU average! GO ECONOMY!

The thing is we don't seem to do all that bad compared to France and Germany when it comes to wages recieved with most studies showing us at or above their levels. So either there are quite high payroll taxes on even average salaries in france/germany...or else our average wage is skewed far higher by a few high earners and a median figure would provide a better insight.

If only she/he'd heeded the advice that vertical stripes are more slimming....

Vertical stripes may be slimming but they wouldn't help with a boob lift!

BTW, for the defence of Bulgarian women everywhere! Here is miss Bulgarian 2011, she's a beauty and she isn't even blonde! :P

You may be only able to hire one Danish worker, but he is probably the best worker in the world.

But in all seriousness Denmark is a great place to do skilled and HiTech business. Frankly minimum wages are irrelevant in most of the tech industry, and the culture in the Nordics means they will actually deliver what they say - rather than 10 components which sort of work individually, but not together. It is often better to hire one good person, than 10 mediocre ones.
