The turmoil in Yemen grew into a regional conflict Thursday, with Saudi Arabia and its allies bombing Shiite rebels allied with Iran, while Egyptian officials said a ground assault will follow the airstrikes.

Iran denounced the Saudi-led air campaign, saying it "considers this action a dangerous step," and oil prices jumped in New York and London after the offensive.

The military action turned impoverished and chaotic Yemen into a new front in the rivalry between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

Yemen's U.S.-backed President Abed-Rabbo Mansour Hadi, who fled the country Wednesday as the rebels known as Houthis advanced on his stronghold in the southern port of Aden, reappeared Thursday. He arrived by plane in Saudi Arabia's capital of Riyadh, Saudi state TV reported.

Starting before dawn, Saudi warplanes pounded an air base, military bases and anti-aircraft positions in the capital of Sanaa and flattened a number of homes near the airport, killing at least 18 civilians, including six children. Another round followed in the evening, again rocking the city.

Saudi Arabia Imposes Naval Blockade On Red Sea Strait, Deploys 150,000 Troops As Iran Condemns Military Action

saudi%20navy.jpg

As noted earlier, the biggest significance of any Yemen conflict has little to do with its own domestic oil production, which at 133,000 bpd is negligible, but due to its location, which not only shares a border with Saudi Arabia, but more importantly due to the Bab el-Mandeb strait which connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden: it is the fourth-biggest shipping chokepoint in the world by volume (3.8 million barrels a day of oil and petroleum products flowed through it in 2013) and is just 18 miles wide at its narrowest point. It’s located between Yemen, Djibouti, and Eritrea, and connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea. And since to Saudi Arabia preserving the logistics of oil supply is critical, it is hardly surprising that as Egypt's Ahram Gate reported earlier, the Saudi-led Firmness Storm coalition imposed a naval blockade on Bab El-Mandab strait earlier today. The Saudi navy's western fleet has also secured Yemen's main ports including Aden and Midi.

Another Middle East War Breaks Out: Saudis Begin Bombing Yemen, US Military Taking Action

20150325_yemen1.jpg

Update: *OBAMA AUTHORIZED LOGISTICAL AND INTELLIGENCE SUPPORT TO GULF, U.S. MILITARY TAKING MILITARY ACTION TO DEFEND SAUDI BORDER, TO DEFEND AGAINST HOUTHI VIOLENCE (so US weapons are being used on both sides)

John McCain - "This is as bizarre as it is misguided – another tragic case of leading from behind.

Earlier today we reported that, on very short notice, Saudi Arabia had moved heavy military equipment including artillery to areas near its border with Yemen, "raising the risk that the Middle East’s top oil power will be drawn into the worsening Yemeni conflict." In other words, Saudi Arabia was preparing for war. Moments ago all these warnings were borne out when Al-Arabiya reported that the latest middle-east war is now official after Saudi Arabia and Arab Gulf States had launched a bombing campaign against Yemen.

Great news for US weapon manufacturers then...

Presenting The Theater Of War; Who Controls Yemen?

yemen%20map.jpg

Curious to learn more about Yemen, and why over just 24 hours it has become the location of the latest war in the middle east? Then the following brief summary on the balance of power, or lack thereof, in Yemen from Stratfor should provide some useful background information.

It's not a civil war (in-country conflict splitting families and communities along lines based on politics and belief). It's a power struggle between factions that happen to be concentrated across several countries.

Someone invent fusion energy bases, please, so we can just build a wall and leave them to it.

But if the countries are mostly artificial constructs as a legacy of colonial administration then thinking of it as a civil war is probably accurate.

I keep dreaming that aliens land on Earth and put a giant force-field from Pakistan/Afghanistan, around the Gulf and Turkey and put all the Islamic nut-jobs inside of it and leave them to get on with killing one another.

So Saudi has been waging a proxy war in Syria/Iraq against Assad and now Iran is ramping up a proxy war against Saudi in Yemen?

The oil price will be interesting. Will Saudi DECREASE production to gain more revenue via a higher price or will they try to keep the oil price down as it will hurt Iran more?

I keep dreaming that aliens land on Earth and take out the whole military industrial establishment of the US and it's vassal states (such as the UK), and all politicians and banksters supporting it.

The middle east has only become a powder-keg since the US (and Israel) started messing with it.

I'm curious, have you ever even attempted to read a history book, or do you just get all of your information from RT? The Middle East has been a conflict zone back to when the Egyptians were fighting the Babylonians at the dawn of civilization. At what point in history do you think the Middle East was a peace zone? Under the French/British colonialists who were there before the Amercians? Or under the Turkish colonialists who were there before them? Or under the Mongols? Egypt was ruled by foreigners from the time of Alexander the Great until 1953 (and they haven't really been doing such a great job of governance since then).

Dont be silly.

Before the west came along the entire world was like a giant coca cola advert where people just wanted to teach the world to sing and give it a hug.

Even lions and tigers were vegan before the advent of American cultural imperialism.

Doubt it. They are the reason oil prices are low.

..which russia is none too happy about.

so they no doubt will be giving iran a bit of "assistance" to counter the saudis.

win-win for them isn't it..you choke off two of your main competitors.

+1

Though, sometimes I wonder if politicians ever attempt to read any history books, either.
