Iran denounced the Saudi-led air campaign, saying it "considers this action a dangerous step," and oil prices jumped in New York and London after the offensive. The military action turned impoverished and chaotic Yemen into a new front in the rivalry between Saudi Arabia and Iran. Yemen's U.S.-backed President Abed-Rabbo Mansour Hadi, who fled the country Wednesday as the rebels known as Houthis advanced on his stronghold in the southern port of Aden, reappeared Thursday. He arrived by plane in Saudi Arabia's capital of Riyadh, Saudi state TV reported. Starting before dawn, Saudi warplanes pounded an air base, military bases and anti-aircraft positions in the capital of Sanaa and flattened a number of homes near the airport, killing at least 18 civilians, including six children. Another round followed in the evening, again rocking the city. Is the whole of the Middle East going to erupt in war? interestrateripoff Posted March 26, 2015 Author Share Posted March 26, 2015 Saudi Arabia Imposes Naval Blockade On Red Sea Strait, Deploys 150,000 Troops As Iran Condemns Military Action As noted earlier, the biggest significance of any Yemen conflict has little to do with its own domestic oil production, which at 133,000 bpd is negligible, but due to its location, which not only shares a border with Saudi Arabia, but more importantly due to the Bab el-Mandeb strait which connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden: it is the fourth-biggest shipping chokepoint in the world by volume (3.8 million barrels a day of oil and petroleum products flowed through it in 2013) and is just 18 miles wide at its narrowest point. It’s located between Yemen, Djibouti, and Eritrea, and connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea. And since to Saudi Arabia preserving the logistics of oil supply is critical, it is hardly surprising that as Egypt's Ahram Gate reported earlier, the Saudi-led Firmness Storm coalition imposed a naval blockade on Bab El-Mandab strait earlier today. In other words, Saudi Arabia was preparing for war. Moments ago all these warnings were borne out when Al-Arabiya reported that the latest middle-east war is now official after Saudi Arabia and Arab Gulf States had launched a bombing campaign against Yemen. It's a power struggle between factions that happen to be concentrated across several countries. But if the countries are mostly artificial constructs as a legacy of colonial administration then thinking of it as a civil war is probably accurate. So Saudi has been waging a proxy war in Syria/Iraq against Assad and now Iran is ramping up a proxy war against Saudi in Yemen? The oil price will be interesting. Will Saudi DECREASE production to gain more revenue via a higher price or will they try to keep the oil price down as it will hurt Iran more? The Middle East has been a conflict zone back to when the Egyptians were fighting the Babylonians at the dawn of civilization. At what point in history do you think the Middle East was a peace zone? Under the French/British colonialists who were there before the Amercians? Or under the Turkish colonialists who were there before them? Or under the Mongols? Egypt was ruled by foreigners from the time of Alexander the Great until 1953 (and they haven't really been doing such a great job of governance since then).
