Everyone must have a box of miscellaneous "things which might be handy one day", surely..

"I'll keep that, I'm sure I shall find a use for it"

The last time I got the box out to see if I had one of those plastic tie clip things, hundreds of tiny miscellaneous objects tumbled to the floor. and I didn't have the tie clip anyway. But I did spend the next week or so picking up screws and nails from the carpet.

I also have a box of cables and adapters. "Ah I'll have one of those in that box". I open the box and stare at this collection of wires that vaguely resembles the Klingon dish "Gagh" which have all become knitted together. "Ah, there's the power adapter for that Motorola phone I had ten years ago. Now why did I keep that?".

I have thrown away a pair of shoes (that's not the confession, they were definitely gone) but only kept one of the laces as the other one was a bit worn.

There, I feel better for admitting that.

Time to get it off your chest.

Fantastically timely as I'm currently listening to "The Millionaire Next Door".

This anecdote suggests that's you.

I'd suggest not as I seem to be alone in this. All the really rich people are hoarding their worn bootlaces and their Motorola chargers rather than merrily throwing them away without a care for whether or not they might come in useful in a few decades.

Has anyone got a spare 140 cm sturdy boot lace that they would be willing to exchange for 2 (two, matching) 90cm lime green laces that I accidently purchased during a brief irrational euphoric phase? We can meet at Gatwick Airport.

:D

Of course. Several boxes made from wood with doors and windows filled with all manner of possibly useful things.

I don't like throwing out a good piece of wood away or good nails and screws...jam jars are also kept for making marmalade and jams, large sturdy plastic containers such as yoghurt pots/ice cream containers for storing and freezing soups and stews or anything useful such as sandwiches....cardboard egg boxes are good for sowing seeds in, so are toilets rolls. ;)

Last year I relented and threw away an old but perfectly serviceable watering can and got a new one. The missing rose just wasn't going to ever turn up, and my insistence on shuffling about like I'd p!ssed myself as I hand gripped an old one to the ill-fitting spout - while water splashed everywhere but intended - provoked only laughter.

Actually...I didn't throw it away it's still on the patio, just in case.

No point in hanging on to it.

You know perfectly well that the missing rose will not turn up until you throw the watering can away.

I'm contemplating buying a new rack for the bike. What was originally a small job of adjusting the back brake, entailed the existing rack's removal. There is now a bolt stuck in the frame which seems imperious to any hack saw. I think it may be titanium. The end result is that I have now no means of attaching the normal rack and am considering one of those that bolt onto the seat post.

All good - except I know I have a seat post mounting rack somewhere in the garage but that predictably enough is now impossible to find.

Brought up to be a hoarder by my mum and dad

When clearing my mother's house after her death, the hoarding had gone up to 11. I opened one cupboard and didn't know whether to laugh or curse her. All lined up like some iron age easter island homage were 9 broken steam irons. "Why? Just why?" I exclaimed in anguish while looking to the heavens.

I couldn't resist cutting off the electrical cords and putting them in a draw before I threw the irons away.

Maybe it's a genetic thing

Oh, and I found a drawer full of fuses and light bulbs too. But i was wise to her on this one, as I knew she kept ones that had blown (bulbs and fuses) but would muddle them with good ones

*Looks to heaven and shouts "WHY?"*

I did try and sort them out, but it was so tedious and time consuming that in a fit of rampant extravagance I threw the whole lot away

Together we'd clean up

My place of work throws away any piece of equipment that fails to turn on or fails its PAT

I have several expensive pieces of kit in my lab that I plundered from the WEEE store that just needed a new fuse (sometimes internal), or just a new plug

However, I also have a bag of several hundred fuses reclaimed from plugs in the WEEE store. There is something about wasting a fuse. I guess it is good for me that the plugs are molded to the cables, otherwise I'd have to save those too..

Lots of little specialisations.

Which happen to crop up with delightful regularity on OT.

You are a Cobbler of knowledge! Although some people here believe I am a Mason, I wanted to join the Cobblers!

I've a garage brimming with such electrical - image what the A-Team or MacGyver could do.

Buy a new one AND throw the old one away?! That is extravagant, even when battling the fates of missing stuff.

Anyhow it's still got to take the obligatory next step yet (into the shed). Reckon could hypothetically turn it into a herb planter, or use it for weedkiller, or some other slightly ocd about fixing or re-using usage...
