The Mouth of Hell.

greyfriars001.jpg

Once seen never forgotten

Mark you it did not look that much worse than the rest of Northamptons plug ugly skyline which is still standing

I thought I'd take the opportunity to boast about the beautiful skyline of my own home town, Paisley. The dome of my old school is on the left.

There seems to be something about bus stations. There are plenty of fabulous railway stations, but has anyone ever seen a nice bus station?

If you try to think of the worst places to be trapped in for all time then UK bus stations must rank high on the list.

I have no doubt that if Dante was writing the Inferno now he would have dedicated a whole Circle of Hell to them

Here is the view of the utterly depressing Guildford Bus station I was forced to use in the 1980s

It has hardly changed one iota over the intervening 30 years

The Northampton council leader has tweeted a photo of the beautiful skyline now visible after the demolition:

The top comment was 'Now Blow The Rest Up'

Given that bus stations are really little more than glorified car parks with a few shelters for passengers, rest rooms for crews and maybe the odd dingy cafe you do wonder how they manage to be so costly for councils to maintain. Greyfriars apparently cost £500,000 a year alone

I went to Northampton bus station once! I was in the act of buying a perfectly pimp-worthy vehicle of dubious origin!

I spent much of my working life in South East London so I know about ugly buildings. I give you the Ferrier Estate Kidbrooke, now demolished. People lived there. As recently as the 1970s the GLC thought it was a good idea. Anyone else know some really gross examples?

I worked in Greenwich Council Housing for a short spell in the 90s. Ferrier was the 'jewel' in a particularly competitive crown IMHO. The estate manager's office felt like somewhere under siege in an especially dystopian movie.

On the subject of dystopian movies, the Heygate Estate was something a bit special and was used as a set for several movies after it was emptied out and waiting for the mercy kill

It's been years since I've been there but I recall the sight of Park Hill in Sheffield as being a particularly grim welcome to anyone coming into the city by train.

I just had a peek to see if it's still standing. It is but has been completely transformed by the addition of some garishly coloured exterior panels.

Now it looks like a multi-coloured prison instead of a grey one.

You would remember Tarves Way in Greenwich before it was re-developed. That was used as a film set as well but 30 seconds of Google has failed to find a referance. I had some locals deliberately block my car in when I was doing a job there.

I recall that, in my childhood, Cumbernauld was to be the City of The Future, planned by statists as the vision of urban living.

And guess what, they were right, for all the wrong ****ing reasons.

Behold the Town Centre.

You saved me some typing there.

Mind you, all I was going to type was "Cumbernauld".

IMDb doesn't confirm this but I think...

Edit: Searching for the Haddo Estate (that name brings back some memories) rather than Tarves Way...

Significant chunks of Greenwich were basically a Mike Leigh wet dream. Obviously, the game's changed completely now that developers have moved into the estates and stuck lime green panels on everything.

Didn't it win some kind of architecture award when it was built? I remember seeing it the day arrived at Sheffield uni in 1983 it looked grim then...

So does nobody else actually like this stuff then? Growing up I assumed that this would be what the whole world would look like by about now and I actually feel a bit cheated that it doesn't. At least then we had a defined "futurism" that we were apparently headed towards - what is considered futuristic in 2015? Sharia law?

To me, the bookmakers ad is comfortably the most offensive thing about that photo.

That's the one. Thanks.

I quite like a lot of that sort of thing. That picture is certainly no worse than a run down Victorian street for me. I find the scale and clean lines majestic when done well. The national theatre is a fabulously beautiful example. I lived in Northampton for a couple of years and never felt moved by its bus station though.
