winkie Posted February 25, 2015 Share Posted February 25, 2015 Classify an MPs job as a part-time job and let them have an other job that is unconnected and is any way influenced by their part-time MP job.....MPs and outside work does not sit well....they should either put 100% time into the important job at hand or do something different.....by the way, when I first started work it was made very clear to all full-time employees that they could not do any other paid work.....a very good policy, meant everyone was always fit for work each day and could concentrate 100% at the job in hand. They make up their own hours, if they do the job properly it should be full time. The reality is that these payments are not payment for services rendered but simple bribes and corruption. Do work, get paid. Sit about, dont get paid. Seriously. We'd prefer people to stay that like the job and see it as a good thing to do for society. The pay is good, honestly. As a senior manager employed by a number of industry leading organisations, there has always been an 'exclusivity of service' clause in my employment contracts that precluded other forms of paid work. MP's and outside part-time work is ok as long as the MP's: 1) do not have conflict of interest via lobby groups etc 2)get paid a pro-rata salary for their MP work. fail on both counts at the moment. by the way, most job contracts for employers(both public and private sector) have sole-employer clauses built in.If an employee is caught moonlighting that is generally deemed as gross misconduct and instantly sackable. seems our MP's need a little reminder of the T's and C's of their contract with the people. At the moment I am not sure if that would be a bad thing, given the current lot we have. yes,to a certain extent probably true..you just get the place full of people who haven't seen the light of day for 40 years or political science graduates straight out of uni. what we are arguing about is the amount of time they are spending on other projects outside the remit they have been given by the electorate.(DURING or directly after their term of office) don't think too many people would have an axe to grind about a candidate who has run their own business or had 15+years experience in some kind of managerial or troubleshooting role BEFORE they put themselves up for candidacy,particularly if they can prove they have got positive results in that time. hardly experienced in the school of life/hard knocks are they? all the more reason for those being selected/elected as MP's to have a CV as a portion of their election blurb they shove through the letterbox. ..after all, YOU are their prospective employer. 3 years as student union debating society champion doesn't quite cut it. I would disagree with a little of that. probably 60-70 % of government business can be done over the web/electronically/telephonically. there are occasional times when you HAVE to do face to face meetings. That is largely what we have now, only when they get one foot in he door, they find it much more lucrative to pimp themselves out to the highest bidder. Outside business interests need to be outside parliament, fat chance when the state is so large that many businesses are little more than rent seekers.
