Stage Plays About The Housing Crisis

Recommended Posts

This will undoubtedly vanish swiftly to Off Topic, however...

Theatre is hardly the MSM, but a subject is getting into the zeitgest when there are two plays about it running simultaneously. So it's interesting to that there are two productions dealing, at least in part, with the housing crisis.

Radiant Vermin by Philip Ridley, currently in Bristol, at the Soho Theatre in London from 10th March to 12th April.

Game, by Mike Bartlett (he of 'King Charles III' fame) at the Almeida in London from this week until 4th April.

We saw a very good recently at the Orange Tree theatre in Richmond, theme was slumlords raking it in.

It was set in the very early 1900s, or maybe even a bit earlier (top hats and long frocks) - apparently one of the first plays of G B Shaw.

Plus ca change...

"Alas poor Fergus, I knew him well."

"A house, a house, my kingdom for a house!"

"To BTL or not to BTL, that is the question"

"The course of properdee speculation never did run smooth."

I wrote my first full length stage play last year (performed by my local am-dram group). The plot was about a couple of 20-something girls that decide to get revenge on their slumlord by stealing a valuable painting he owns from an art auction. Couple of not-too-subtle digs about bankers in there too. Seemed to go down well, and was later published by one of the newer online publishing houses.

Every little helps. Although I wouldn't bank on seeing it on the West End any time soon.
