Flathunting Rant

Recommended Posts

Decided to look for another place to live, preferrably closer to work.

Just wanted to vent as it seems that most of the places that have come up for rent that interest me are 'furnished'. I have my own crappy furniture to put in the flat, thank you very much!

Not all tenants want to sleep on the cheapest, nastiest beds provided. Or sleep in the same bed that the previous owner occupier probably died in Or take a risk in the knowledge that any accidental damage to the 1960s teak unit/sideboard will possibly result in £50 being deducted from the deposit!

Rant over!

I've found this myself. What size flat you after, and is there any chance of getting the same size house instead, may be easier to get unfurnished in that situation?

A 1 or 2 bedroomed flat would suit me.

A house would be OK but I can't be bothered with keeping the garden tidy tbh. There is usually a rule in the tenancy stating that the gardens must be tendered to. Houses tend to be more expensive than flats in my area plus I quite like 1 level living. :)

Just keep telling the letting agents or LL's that you want it unfurnished! I'm sure one will get the message sooner or later!

That level 1 living certainly helps if you are living in a high risk flood area! :P

Should be viewing a 1 bedroomed coach house style flat next Friday on a mundane newish estate. Shock horror - it's unfurnished!! :D

If I'm not mistaken, buy to let landlords get extra tax incentives for letting out furnished as opposed to unfurnished flats so this may explain it somewhat.

that's right - if you let the property "furnished" you get to deduct 10% of the annual rent from your taxable rental profits to reflect "wear & tear".........

But if it is unfurnished don't they get lower council tax when it is void?
