Teach Tourism In North Korea?

Recommended Posts

You've gotta be joking. Tourism to a country where half the inhabitants are starving? How are they going to hide that from the tourists?

Lentils!

High walls and an army of secret police with guns I imagine !

Foreigners arriving to the country are usually closely monitored by the secret services, and are only allowed to interact only with specially selected members of North Korean society.

It'll be like Russia used to be, only more so - tourists herded around by 'sheepdogs' and only allowed in certain areas with happy, smiling people.

There have been tourist trips to North Korea for many years; I read an article a while back by a guy who went there in the 80s or 90s. Needless to say, the others on the trip were all adoring Commies and didn't go anywhere that people were starving.

Besides, they've just built a ski resort, and I'm sure no-one will be starving there.

Doesn't stop a lot of people from visiting India or other dirt poor countries...

They are "reaching out", so they can "network".

I guess they have the same problems as us, in trying to keep busy.

Guy Delisle is an animator who worked out there for a year and produced a excellent graphic novel of his experiences. And yes, a lot of it is as you say. Very good read: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/0224079905/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1424728418&sr=8-1π=AC_SY200_QL40&keywords=guy+delisle&dpPl=1&dpID=51TIEFh20oL&ref=plSrch
