Sky To Block Spanking The Monkey Material By Default. Nanny Knows Best

Recommended Posts

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-30896813

Broadband provider Sky will block adult content by default, unless users opt out, it has revealed.

The decision was announced in a blog post and will be phased in over coming weeks.

In 2013 Prime Minister David Cameron put pressure on internet service provider [iSPs] to make online filtering mandatory, saying it was the best way to protect children.

His request caused controversy among politicians and the internet industry.

Since then most of the UK's ISPs have offered filtering software for parents concerned about what their children may be able to access online but few have offered this by default, opting instead to allow parents or other customers to turn the filters on if they want them.

Sky's Broadband Shield is designed to filter out content deemed to be unsuitable for children aged under 13. It has been offered as default to new customers for a year.

But now the firm has decided to also offer it to all its existing customers, some 5.3 million in total.

Is there a black list of sites or does it filter via some other clever technology?

So all sky users will have to ring up and explain they need access for research purposes?

I would ring up and say that as I am paying for the internet then I would like to receive all of it. Some estimates have put pron (which is the excuse of what this is about) at being 90% of the internet - fine, set the filter but reduce my bill accordingly!

Probably a move to charge for video streaming? Cut down all those porn videos being downloaded and then, at some future date, charge for video streaming.

VOD is a huge competitor for Sky. The domination that the likes of Sky, BBC, etc, have had on UK broadcasting has delayed internet video companies becoming more widespread in the UK. In places like the US the traditional cable and satellite broadcasters have seen huge declines in subscribers as people move to Netflix, Amazon, etc, etc. The same is now happening in the UK.

I moved to Talktalk last year and they do the same; albeit not intentionally.

Their "Homesafe" settings look like you can tailor them to whatever you want but in reality you can't turn them off. There are whole threads on the Talktalk help forum about this and the uselessness of the support staff; the only advice that seems to work for a minority of people is turning off the router and clearing your cache then you get a new IP address and the revised "off" settings work. For most people (me included) this doesn't work.

Before anybody starts sniggering this is not just pron.

I cannot get odds on football matches or place a bet (that's gambling), I cannot look at homebrew forums or sites (alcohol) and I am a homebrewer so want to. It goes on.

I will be going back to BT when it expires, the £2 a month saving or whatever is not worth being treated like a child.

Murdoch the great Free Marketeer deciding what his customers can see? Never......

It will be interesting to see whether these moves start to affect their sales.

I guess the issue is that the companies won't promote the fact and customers will forget to ask.

Presumably as this is something David Cameron has personally pushed for it will only be a matter of time before all companies are forced down the same path.

Virgin media is pretty much the only game in town for serious broadband in the UK. If you can get it and you're not on it you should be thinking about moving.

Not so - there's many 'this page can't be accessed via VM' location IP denials in place.

Unless you VPN of course, which I think VM has done bad PR with - they should be displaying that 'due to your country's draconian laws, we can't let you visit this page with your current location but if you find out how to change it (wink, wink) you'll get through like a breeze!'.

Are they blocking access to the search results of is it a wider block to anything suspected of being porn?

As we have seen they used broad range keywords to put these blocks in not always entirely successfully.

That's not what a cursory read of the Virgin Media forums reveals.

Some people will moan about anything. It's difficult to argue with the fact that they're the fastest and most reliable ISP in the UK. At least for domestic use.

On Sky all torrent and file indexing websites are blocked, pretty annoying but anyone serious about torrenting should be using a VPN anyway.

Newzbin was one of the first to go..... As soon as sky blocked it I got rind of sky and told them why...

There was a silver lining though. I built a linux box and did some fast track reading and learning, put sickbeard and some other speshal tools on it. Problem solved and it will never suffer from site blocking.

XYY man will be upset. First they clamp down on hanging the monkey, now spanking the monkey is frowned upon too... They won't be happy until the monkey has the whip hand.

A little peeved maybe crashy mate - but they'll enter a world of XYY-pain should they ever try and ban Monkey Trousers...!

Hey, Anyone remember the sex scene in George Orwell's 1984.....

Of course we won't be able to see it soon.

1984 THEME OF REPRESSION

Because sex and family create private loyalties, the Party must somehow control these social acts and constructs. Thus, the Party brainwashes children to believe that sex is despicable, unpleasurable, and merely a means to create new Party members. Chastity is encouraged, sexual drives become repressed, sex is seen as a "duty to the Party," and all potential private loyalties are thus eliminated.

The swinging 60s, flower power and free love was the epicenter of freedom.

Whatever became of Tory Mp Clair Perry that was leading all this repression/censorship stuff?

(wiki says shes now a single mother, so her kids come from a "broken home")
