Local Mamas And Papas Shutting Down..

Recommended Posts

My wife tells me the local mamas and papas is shutting down.

Not heard owt on the news.

It seems several stores are to close.

Anyone heard this?

Im not surpised...its expensive and northampton is not affluent in the main.

Makes me wonder why agents have tried pushing up ask8ng prices to 2007+30%.

A local chain to shut in Cambridge also...remember going there with mum and dad back in the 80s/90s most saturdays.

Oddly its always busy...No reason given other than its gone into liquidation, but I would suspect high rents.

Mamas + Papas fascinated me.

When the economy tanked, they announced they were going to massively expand their retail sites.

There were loads of articles in the (Yorkshire) press. They are based in Huddersfield.

Loads of stuff about the founders - business woman of the year etc etc.

That was 2008.

By 2012ish the wheels had really fallen off.

Looking for cash.

Banks withdrawing credit.

Banks install CEO.

Pretty fit daughters if you fancy a MIL who's worth (-) 20M

I also noted a week or so back Tesco's says it will NEVER open a new store in chatteris (despite already building the damn thing)

Never is a long time. They must be quite convinced business aint going to pick up.

I went to Chatteris once.

Until then, I thought the storied about one-armed, in-bred fenland freaks was an urban myth.

Rents and lets not forget council rates....another hidden sales tax for the sheeple to pay.

Councils getting too greedy maybe?

Or the retailer.

I have no inside info but Ithink Mamas + Papas came unstuck as the owners looked at the business, saw they had a high revenu but where making f-all money. They then leveraged up and took on loads of new leases, all for it to slap back intheir face as the recession and internet but had.

Still, I bet the banks earned some fees.

Ha...apparently the drugs capital of the fens.

I didnt believe it, Chatteris being so small I thought that would be Wisbech, but apparently true.

I guess the gene purity has been somewhat corrupted by the influx of eastern europeans now...although given the sheer number of empty Tyskie cans that litter the place, foetal alcohol syndrome may be a bigger issue. A lot of commuters to Cambridge now to be fair, given the sheer cost of housing anywhere closer to ely.

Mamas and Papas. Strange to limit your target market. Same with Mothercare.

These days, anyone can look after children.

It's the same with underwear - I hear that "unisex" underwear is taking off.
