Economist: Housing Is Expensive Because, Erm.. Bricks

The amount of money people in the developed world pay for housing is rising and the solution is... better building techniques. *Facepalm*

Admittedly, this article is not just about the UK, and perhaps the cost of construction is problem in certain parts of the developing world, but they don't mention the elephants in the room when it comes to the developed world and its financial system.

They do have a point. Ask anyone who has ever looked at self-build.

Take a totally timber house (as used in Europe, N. America, Australia...) if you go to Eastern Europe they'll produce one for around £32,000 (plus 100 euro/day installation cost) you can get an 80m2 house http://www.danmardomy.pl/all-year-houses.html(I'm sure a better deal can be found) how much would the raw materials and labour for an equivalent brick house cost?

House building is about a 100 years behind the car industry when it come to mass production in this country, which is a bit ironic considering all the big house builders spew-out the same designs over the country.

The Economist's story about "better building techniques" to solve the housing problem is a story that has been regularly resurrected over the years and decades - yet little or nothing seems to change with UK housing.

More came of better building techniques with the UK's post war prefabs than has ever come from the media stories on the subject since then.

The link below from 2005 is a typical example in a long line of similar stories over the years - Mr John Prescott of NuLabour was credited with that proposal although he was quoted as also being (apparently) happy about the idea of house demolition where "necessary". They're building even fewer new homes now than they were in 2005 of course.

"Britain has reduced the cost of raw materials for social housing by up to 30% since 2010 by establishing purchasing consortia."

Maybe, but they are rubbish and will be slums in a decade.

Some better looking bricks are 75 pence each. The price of bricks may also be rigged - try shopping around for them and see if you can buy the same thing from different places for different prices.

Cement companies get done about every decade for operating a price ring. Holland reduced the cost of building a while ago by prosecuting building companies working scams - not likely to happen here of course.

May I suggest the old favourite of the past millennia? Rammed earth. Requires cheap labour, has low transport costs as you use local subsoils. You might consider an updated version of wattle and daub since there are thousands of very old houses that have survived the ravages time. Get those in need of social housing to build their own homes - most people can pick up mud and sling it.

In Peterborough a local housing association took a row of grade II listed buildings opposite the museum and turned them into 'shared equity' flats. They have been finished over 6 months and yet I've only seen estate agents using the car park as free parking. A few of the downstairs flats have been kitted out for show with knick-knacks that nobody reduced to buying the flats would waste their money on. I suspect there is a clause in the deal that says if they don't sell them within a certain time period they get let by the current owners as antisocial housing.

By the way, the downpipes at the front are blocked so when it rains, water cascades down the grade II frontage doing untold damage. Great workmanship guys! Who's idea was it to put up blocked gutters...?
