If they need modernisation, because they were lived in by old people who had changed nothing for decades, that may just be another plus to buyers. They will not be paying a hefty premium for someone else's idea of a nice new kitchen and bathroom, which would never be what they would choose themselves. Fair enough- its obviously going to be refurbed and is probably a pretty generous plot. The point is the price.
