A man in Liverpool has purchased a four-bedroom house complete with three living rooms, a cellar and two bathrooms - all for just £1.

Taxi driver Jayalal Madde, 49, purchased the property on Cairns Street, Toxteth, from Liverpool Council, who put 20 properties up for sale for just £1 a year ago.

After spending £30,000 on renovating the property, Mr Madde is now hoping to move his family in before Christmas.

Good news if you can find work in Liverpool. How long do you have to have been resident in the area to qualify?

It might be a good scheme on the face of it, but really it's just another government handout to politically favoured demographics based on arbitrary criteria.

If the council owns whole streets why on earth is it giving them away? It's like a 99% Right to Buy discount.
