“This extraordinary rate of expansion, high dropout rates, and warnings from within the sector ought to have set alarm bells ringing,” she added.

For the two largest of these new institutions – named by the NAO as London School of Business and Finance, and London School of Science and Technology – the dropout rate rose to about five times the average. Part of the problem stemmed from the rapid recruiting of foreign students, the NAO found. The auditor found that another group of 5,500 undergraduates from the EU have been unable to prove they were either living in the UK or entitled to public funding.

Remember this scandal over Individual Learning Accounts (ILAs) from 2003 ?

Labour Gov successfully covered up the scandal with the "Computers Within Reach " scheme as well. Millions were not accounted for & where did it go ?

Ministry blamed for learning fraud

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/2913987.stm

In the latest report on the scandal over Individual Learning Accounts (ILAs), MPs say the scheme was wide open to fraud.

The ILA scheme is said to have wasted £97m of tax-payers' money.

The new report - from the Commons' Public Accounts Committee - says education officials ignored warnings that the

scheme was open to abuse

Another fine example of EU immigrants taking the p1ss.

Probably not EU immigrants but overseas immigrants. I know someone who lived here for 5 years in the 90's on a student visa despite going to college twice!

AFAIK this has been a problem for a long time - people registering for some course or other but never intending to do it. I have read that some so-called colleges are in fact just fixit- shops for visas, though they may keep up appearances with the odd course in the building.

Nothing new, been going on for a number of years,This government ignored the problem, the last government encouraged them to come. But hey the UKIP threat is bringing all sorts of abuses to the surface.

Not new at all, but people used to do it just for the ticket in to the country.

Now companies are making huge amounts in fees from it out of the tax payer direct.

EU migrants have the free right of movement so don't need this "ticket in to the country". We've been that told often enough by UKIP (who believe it is a negative effect of the EU)

That'll be some higher interest rates and more stringent payment terms to make up the deficit for fraud. Openly encouraged and enabled by UK recent governments until the worst of the scandals hit the press, when they promise again to do "something". http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/11269201/Illiterate-builder-in-400000-fake-student-loan-trafficking-scam-court-hears.html Illiterate builder in £400,000 fake student loan trafficking scam, court hears A Romanian builder, who cannot read or write, is being investigated for allegedly trafficking people up to 40 people to the UK to fradulently sign up for £10,000 student loans before taking a cut.
