Right To Rent' Checks Start In West Midlands

Recommended Posts

I'm not a huge fan of this, estate agents and landlords are nosey buggers at the best of times, asking for all sorts of information they are not entitled to and seem to have no data handling awareness.

Or looking at it from the perspective of someone who cares about tenants rights:

Tenants (aka scum who can't afford to buy a house like decent people) now required to prove they aren't criminals.

Tenants will probably be charged ID check fees, another additional cost for renters.

What about British people (they'll have to be checked as well) who don't have passports or photocard driving licences (I know a few low paid workers who fit into this category)? Will birth certificates or NI cards be accepted, if not they'll have to pay to get a passport (that they might never use to travel abroad)!

Oh and of course illegal immigrants won't have access to forged documents or use a friend to rent a house/room for them (and then several move in). Hell some LL will even help arrange this and if the house gets raided will say they've never seen the tenant before.

Yet a tenant has no right to know the LL credit history, whether they are paying the mortgage, if they have a BTL mortgage or get references as to whether they are a good LL etc...

On Friday legislation to give tenants more rights was talked out by a LL MP, but never mind eh this is doing something about immigrants!

Have a friend who could not apply for even a cleaning job as tesco required a passport as ID before she could even get an application form. After much chasing up she discovered they would accept a birth certificate.

One would normally have some sort of ID lined up for these kinds of eventualities. For normal, organised people this shouldn't be a problem. Whether they should be charged extra for it, is another matter.

I was once asked for my driving licence before I could hire a van shocker

The driving licence is directly related to driving the van, though, isn't it?

It's a bit different asking a person who hasn't even got the blasted zero-hours minimum wage job yet to shell out £72.50 for a passport.

Some places won't accept a birth certificate, as it's not photo ID.

Jim Haliburton was on the radio this morning pooh-poohing the idea. Since it won't be the landlord's legal responsibility to determine if the passport is genuine - a reasonable examination of the document is all they're expected to make - then nothing has changed. Business as usual for the HMO daddies and their immigrant hordes.

Regardless of anything else, how is a LL supposed to be able to distinguish a fake passport when it's far from obvious?

Of course our borders should be hugely tightened up - successive governments have done nothing but shrug their shoulders helplessly as if it's out of their hands.

But I would imagine there are plenty of LLs who deliberately rent substandard accommodation to people they know perfectly well are illegal, people who will not dare to complain to anyone in authority, and who will pay cash. None of which will ever go anywhere near HM Taxman.

So tell me, where will all the illegal immigrants live?....not as if they can buy themselves a home, not as if they are not sent home wherever that maybe...who decides where they came from? ;)

I am in favour of this new system. I suspect the real motive is to prevent the new ghettos and shanty towns springing up. Where do the illegals go? I'd bung them some money for an air ticket and send them back home.

What home? Where?.......Global village?

We probably need to find an empty country somewhere and put in a nice health service, housing, jobs etc and peopel will flock there instead.

Are there any empty countries anywhere we could use?

The problem is they came here illegally, The problem is ours.

In the past we have granted amnesties.......treating the symptoms....people will always want to travel to places where they believe they will have a better quality of life. human nature....there will always be people who will help them to do that. human nature.....sleeping under a bridge or in a shed in safety here is a better quality of life for millions of people..... ;)

I'm all for getting rid of people who shouldn't be here (I'd love to get rid of millions who should be too, alas I've never thought of a morally acceptable way of doing it) but this isn't it. It's going too far (again) against "mind you own bloody business," as does anything that affects potentially everyone. Treating people as potential criminals unless they can demonstrate otherwise is never acceptable.

Having a general economy that effectively supports illegal immigrants is one way to encourage them to carry on coming, as in practice they find it isn't really all that illegal

At least now you won't get landlords minting it out of bidding up rents for a house full of illegals, and pricing everyone else out

Eh?

What about mortgage and bank account applications, plane tickets, entering another country etc?

You think I'm keen on all the other unncessary, nosey, invasive checks?

Funny how often this happens when I object to something, there always seems to be a weird assumption that I'm perfectly fine with everything comparable that already exists. Point out that isn't the case but (even grudgingly) accept some of them and you get accused of being inconsistent, as if everything is black and white and dead simple, must either want complete anarchy or complete control.
