Frank Hovis
They are the absolute worst part of the local radio morning show, an extended meterological lecture that leaves you absolutely clueless about whether it might rain this afternoon but tells you a high pressure front is coming down from Finland some day soon. All I want to know about the weather is the basic headlines, ditto for travel news. These are not important areas in their own right where a specialist reporter can help as they actually understand it - such as business news or sport - this is simple stuff. The news reader can read three lines from the met office report as well as somebody with a degree in it. Pointless positions, on a par with keeping the coal shoveller on diesel trains because we've always had one. Sky ditched its weather presenters in 2010; about time the rest caught up. Especially the BBC that keeps banging on about making efficiencies whilst not doing so.

Riedquat
No, give me the details please like the fronts and areas of pressure. A little bit of "why" behind a fact or statement makes it easier to grasp and remember as well as giving a better feel of the overall situation. It doesn't take long and isn't difficult to understand, I don't see a problem.

You're in a minority then, I am no more interested in cold fronts over Russia than the technical reasons for particular roads being dug up for drainage works. I want to know if the sun will shine and what roads are closed; I don't want a lecture on either. John Kettley was the one I meant. erat_forte
The shipping forecast is the only one worth bothering with. I once watched a ships captain listening and taking notes with pen and paper. By the end he had created a complete weather map. Most impressive. Economic Exile
I don't watch much tv and it's a rarity if I watch tv news or weather. Regarding weather. My view is that it's not an exact science where anyone really knows anything meaningful about it overall. My preference is this internet site, as I just want a reasonable idea what the day or next few days might be like. http://www.accuweather.com/en/gb/united-kingdom-weather Like other sites, you can set it to your own area and it has an hourly feature which I find useful. It's also more useful when the unreliable nature of weather forecasting makes it rather hard to say when and where it'll rain. Give the general situation and let people make their own decisions based on that. Why did you even mention drainage works, or dug up? Surely only open or not matters to you. So you also grumble if they bother telling you why a train is running late?

crashmonitor
My main grumble with the national Weather forecast is that the presenters tend to concentrate on where the weather is interesting.....that's basically Cornwall, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Skye etc. Never pro rate population, sometimes 50% of the forecast seemingly covers 0.01% of the population. By the time they decide to do the rest of the country it becomes a Shaka knackered unintelligible rush.

FallingAwake
http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/ ... is all you need. Pop in your location and you know that temperature it is, what it's likely to be throughout the day, when it's likely to rain etc... pretty much all in one glance. Whatever floats your boat but, if going anywhere with them, in that boat, it will need to benefit from some substantial archimedean upthrust, I would think.
