How A Biracial Woman Grew Up Thinking She Was White

Recommended Posts

When Lacey Schwartz was accepted to Georgetown University, the school saw her photo and passed her name along to the black student association. The organization contacted her.

The only issue: Schwartz had grown up in a Jewish household in Woodstock New York, and had always — despite occasional questions about the source of her brown skin and curly hair — identified as white.

That's American racism for you. Everyone who isn't 100% white is considered to be black.

Obama is the perfect example, he's 50% white and 50% african, but of course he's considered to be black .

The Nazis would be so proud of this mentality.

Bob Marley too, even though he's half Essex.

Also, what is the difference between "black/biracial" and "white/biratial"?

You can apparently only be white if you are 100% pure Arianwhite...

does anyone care other than snobbish liberals?

Somebody wants to tag you and put you in a category! Nothing wrong with being a brown Jew! If your mother is Jewish you can be, if you choose!

Also how many people of European descent can conclusively prove they don't have an African Roman Legionry in their family tree a couple of thousand years ago?

Doesn't matter. In the case of the OP, shouldn't matter either. I don't give a bollock about race ancestry, what I judge people by is behaviour - which in many cases means culture.

The tragedy is that somewhere in the Universrity mindset someone thought they had the right to categorise her as type B or type D. Not cool.

I wonder about the busybody school that decided to put the black student association in contact with her. WTF has it to do with the school?

And in a non racist society, why is there a black student association, not just a student association.

There could be a Black Welsh student association! Hello Shirley! Anyone else joined?

Quite.

There is a bit of confused thinking behind people who don't want to be forced to use separate toilets or sit at the back of the bus but do want separate student association based on skin colour. It is not even a cultural or linguistic grouping which at least would have made some sense. I mean what have Tamils, Melanesians and Afro Americans got in common apart from the way evolution has painted their exterior. Anyway good to see that the Jim Crowideas are live and well in the US.

Everybody has an African ancestor if you go back far enough.

Not necessarily. The evidence is pitifully small.

When I was at college the suggestion that there was cross-breeding between homo sapiens and neanderthals got short thrift. It didn't happen.

Lo and behold genetic evidence now proves that it did.

Whilst you need to have a theory around the evidence, or all you are left with is dry bones, remember that human origins is a very small discipline working with a tiny amount of evidence so any theory should just be seen as working hypothesis. It's on even shakier ground than climate science.

Some groups have shouted so loud they've now managed to segregate themselves all over again.

The evidence is indeed tiny but what there is suggests that Neanderthal DNA only makes up a tiny bit of modern European DNA with the rest being from Homo Sapiens.

Of course, fossils dont show skin colour anyway and from what we do know it appears this is one of the most mutable features of human DNA which naturally selects as people live closer to the Polar regions of the planet (ie it is more concerned with where you live than where your distant ancestors come from). Interestingly human females of all derivations tend to be lighter in colour than corresponding human males
