Should We Do Away With Affordable Rents

Recommended Posts

The very word 'affordable' is daft, implying as it does that everything else is unaffordable, and if that were literally the case then the vast majority of rents would have to be 'affordable'. Though of course an awful lot of rents are in any case only 'affordable' because of HB.

What they really mean is 'slightly less expensive than others' but that is too much like calling a spade a spade, not to mention too much of a mouthful.

Should we do away with affordable rents, and bring back social rents?

Not knowing how to vote my answers are to the 4 questions:

Instead of seeing that private rents are too high and reducing the levels of subsidy to private landlords they believe the best solution is to raise social rents, so presumably nobody can afford to live in rented housing without a subsidy;

Yep, but if your overall strategy was to devalue the currency and thus your monstrous unpayable debts, given the choice of deflating nominal costs, or alternatively inflating them in the hope of forcing nominal incomes up to match, you'd choose the latter, wouldn't you?

That overarching theme dictates most policy.
