Rosetta Landing On A Comet Or Crashing Into One Thread

Recommended Posts

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-30012854

History beckons for the European Space Agency as it attempts to put a small probe on a comet later.

Previous missions have flown by these "ice mountains" but no-one has ever emplaced a surface lander before.

Esa's Rosetta satellite will drop the probe on to Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko from an altitude of 20km.

The mission has passed last-minute checks, and a final "go" signal was given after 0700. Confirmation of touchdown is expected at 16:00 GMT.

If all goes to plan, the little robot, called Philae, will deploy screws and harpoons to secure its position on the comet after a seven-hour flight.

The first thing Philae will do on landing is send back a picture of its surroundings - a strange landscape containing deep pits and tall ice spires.

This is, though, an event with a highly uncertain outcome.

A decade in space and it may end up crashing onto the surface. It will be an incredible achievement if they pull this off.

  • Song recorded on instrument designed to analyse 67P's magnetic field
  • Scientists believe it was created by a stream of charged particles

And according the Wail it's singing.

I like the (Brit) professor in charge of the project interviewed on the BBC this morning..

Was he wearing a brightly coloured home-knitted jumper?

Wait for the conspiracy theories to start. All faked up on a back lot in Hollywood. Shot on a grassy knoll etc..

Edit: Probe not yet anchored successfully. Problems as comet's surface may be softer than expected. First pictures expected in an hour.

Robot Philae has made history by landing on a comet. Mr Clegg says he's amazed; he thought Comet had gone bust ages ago. Awkward.

Landing on a comet difficult...? Hadaway and shite!

They should try landing a job in Middlesbrough...

XYY

But..but... the comet is cold, lifeless and inhospitable!

Oh something's gone wrong! Crisis meeting called.

From what I can see the harpoons didn;t fire and they think it bounced. They seem to be making light of it in the press briefing, but I'm not so sure. If the thing did bounce it could re-orientate itself and end up upside down, on its side, who knows what. That might not be great if the instruments are all pointing the wrong way and the camera is pressed up against the surface, we could end up seeing sweet fa.

So there is still a chance that this wasteful bloated EU funded mega project could be a failure, no doubt pleasing the HPC massive.

Why would it be a failure, all added to GDP. Admittedly not on the scale building a death star....

A minor mechanical failure may have blown the mission.
