The Rise Of The Russian Bear Thread

Recommended Posts

I found this House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee session on Russian corruption and the UK interesting.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0b240t9/select-committees-foreign-affairs-committee

https://parliamentlive.tv/event/index/cd11d515-ffb6-4842-bdbd-018d55ec7a56

Highlights:

The dynamics and limits of Putin's Cosa Nostra-like relationship with the oligarchs:  The oligarchs pay Putin tribute, he creates opportunities and solves problems for them.  Putin is stronger than any oligarch but together they would be stronger than him.

The US' and EU's sanctions against Russia.  The US' objectives are not all well-definined and they appear to want to defeat Russia economically.  The EU's objectives are more linked to specific Russian activities and de-escalation is possible.

The Russians perceive that the West is engaged in a political war against them.

So the rich and powerful pay the person at the top to use the resources and powers of the state to benefit them?

Unbelievable!  Thankfully nothing like that happens in the West.  No sirree.

While the G7 pisses about in Canada, mostly arguing with Trump, China and Russia get down to important business ...

As G-7 Fractures In Canada, Putin Meets Xi In China

While President Trump insults his erstwhile foreign partners in a colorful twitter tirade ahead of a G-7 (or rather, G-6+1) summit in Quebec, exposing the very real fragmentation of longtime western partnerships as the US cracks down on unfair foreign trade practices, a productive meeting between China's "Emperor for Life" Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin has been completely overshadowed, as Bloomberg points out.

"We Fear For Our Lives": First 50 White South African Families Start Resettlement In Russia

Just weeks after we reported that white South African farmers, facing racial genocide, had begun seeking refuge - from the violent attacks and death threats of their own government's policies - in friendly foreign nations such as Australia, RT reports  the first 50 families of Boers, descendants of Dutch settlers in South Africa, could soon be moving to Russia to escape rising violence against farmers.

I'm surprised your hero Vladmir Dobby has time for all this, considering he is busy murdering people in Britain.

Dobby's second assassin sidekick has now been unmasked as Alexander Petrov.

Errol, you sure picked a **** for your fanboi fawning.

Full stream ahead! Russia & Turkey officially complete construction of joint gas pipeline

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan will participate in an official ceremony on Monday marking the completion of the offshore section of the Turkish Stream natural gas pipeline.

The offshore section of the pipeline, which is 930km (578 miles) and runs along the bottom of the Black Sea, is designed to deliver Russian gas to the Turkish market. Russia’s Gazprom began construction of the section in May 2017. In June, President Putin said an extension of the Turkish Stream pipeline (aka TurkStream) to Bulgaria had been agreed. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has asked Russia to extend the Turkish Stream natural gas pipeline to his country and further into Europe.

The diplomat noted that the rising prices for energy commodities, which form the basis of Russian exports to the EU, as well as currency fluctuations were among the major factors of positive dynamics

So, the price of oil went up and the Ruble fell in value. Wooo!

Russia To Overtake Germany As World's Fifth-Largest Economy

Despite years of international sanctions and low oil prices, which pushed the Russian economy into a recession during 2015, UK-based global bank Standard Chartered predicted in a report published this week that Russia will overtake Germany as the world's fifth largest economy, possibly as early as next year.

Apparently they are predicting a 16.5%  average annual growth rate over the next 11 years for Russia, while predicting it will hit 1.8% next year.

********. And where in the Russian economy is there going to be growth? the population is falling

While that kind of growth seems unlikely to me, Russia has been buddying up to China, which will presumably lead to a lot more cooperation to reduce dependency on the US and Europe. As for population, why would a falling population prevent growth? We have these things called 'computers' and 'robots' these days.

Russias entire economy consists  of digging stuff out of the ground and selling it. Mainly  oil, demand for which will fall off a cliff over the next decade.

Gas will have a lot of growth potential, but triple the size of the economy.. no chance.

The growth predicted for other countries by Standard Charted is equally ridiculous, even ignoring the imminent global recession.

PwC have a more realistic  world GDP predictions for 2050.
