Bookham - 5,500 To 210 In 5 Years

Recommended Posts

We just keep on moving up the value chain don't we? Chop off the feet, chop off the legs, chop off the arms, chop off the torso and you are left with the head which then does what? Falls to the ground with one final plop?

Torbay's economy suffered another major blow today as electronics firm Bookham Technology announced the end of manufacturing at its Paignton site with 150 jobs being axed.

Once the jobs have gone there will be just 210 "key knowledge" workers left at a new site elsewhere in Paignton. The huge factory complex off the Torbay ring road at White Rock - which once housed 5,500 staff - will no longer be used by Bookham.

The announcement brings an end to almost 50 years of world-leading electronics manufacture at the factory.

Management confirmed that its "Chip on Carrier" manufacturing department will move to China, leaving only the research and development department.

A spokesman told the Herald Express: "Bookham Technology is going to remain in Paignton as a research and development facility, but they may move to alternative premises. It is too big now."

The rest of the company's former assembly work and manufacturing has already been shipped out to China.

Bookham shares where trading at about £50 each prior to the dot con crash and many employees became very rich as they had all been given shares in the company and them in the know, cached them in before the crash took hold.

Few years ago Bookham was working on a type of optical chip using modifying machinery that was used to manufacture conventional silicon chips and this gave them a head start over the competition plus optical chips are not taken out by a blast from nuclear bombs.

Do you think building in Iran are built better than the twin towers in NY because the one just hit by a plane in Iran has not fallen down yet, silly me forgot they don’t need a direct impact ! WT7 got blown over by the draft from the impact.
