Homeowners With Japanese Knotweed Could Be Fined £2,500 Under New Rules

  • New laws could see homeowners fined for allowing pesky plants to spread
  • Japanese knotweed and giant hogweed are both deemed objectionable
  • Homeowners will have to take 'reasonable steps' to control the plants
  • Businesses also face fines of up to £25,000 according to the plan
  • As well as a fine, homeowners could also be hit with a criminal conviction

More cash to be extracted from people. I'm guessing the fine won't be used to remove the issue?

According to Dr Knotweed, there is already a fine:

Should an offence be committed, a magistrate’s court could impose a maximum fine of £5000, a prison sentence of up to 6 months or even both as modified in the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 for England and Wales.

Although, this is for allowing the knotweed spread from your premises to wild land.

Haha - they really cocked that one up!

thanks god it's the home OWNER who has to pay the fines and not the occupant. Usually laws in the UK are unfairly drafted against renters so that a said owner could rent out such a property and get the tennatn to pickup the tab for their responsibility.

Also opens up a lovely knot tweed black market for tenant landlord revenge. Said tenant plants knot weed a few months before leaving a property then reports the landlord.

Truly evil stuff. There is a patch of it near me - apparently the result of building some water treatment centre and bringing in contaminated top soil. The farmer whose land it is on is going absolutely spare because the contractor charged with fixing it appears to be doing virtually nothing to halt the spread, never mind actually get rid of it.
