That is a terrible thing to say as at the time 50.3% would have survived the infection. Does anyone know why the mortality rate is now approaching 70%? Has the virus mutated and become more virulent? The different outbreaks/strains of ebola, which historically happened at separate locations and separate times had different mortality rates. The mortality rate may relate to the predominant outbreak/strain or could well track the engulfing of the medical services leading to higher mortality rates. You think you are so special that you need your own ebola thread makes you think that you don't think that you will be one of the 1 million! 1 million deaths in the UK from that would cause a complete collapse. People would be refusing to go to work. How would people eat. I imagine lots of hospital staff would not go into work. Plenty of people dependent on care in their homes would be forgotten about. How about Law & Order - would the boys in blue turn out for... anything? Transportation would collapse. Sterling would collapse. The economy would collapse. I naively assumed that without a vaccine or effective treatment/cure, medical intervention was nothing more than palliative care, whether or not you survived was down to proper hydration and that 50-70% roulette wheel alone (lady luck). I believe it was a statistical quirk combined with some optimistic bias in the reporting. As the number of cases rose quickly, the number who had the disease but had not yet died from it increased, temporarily reducing the overall mortality rate. 1 week earlier it was 70% and 1 week later it was back to 70%, the media types seized on the good news without looking into the details (how unusual). I guess if you are stuck outside in a relative's car rather than a treatment centre then your chances of being properly hydrated / monitored for any sort of balance in your system would be somehwere near zero. There are natural survivors (with or without treatment), so some bodies at least are able to arrest the attack on the body, much better chance with care than without. Remedies / transfusions, another whole level of medical interventation that are most likely to improve survival chances so again, once medical services overwhelmed, survival rates will fall. Yeah I agree with you there, it seems quite obvious that if or when Ebola gets a foothold in Britain and we have a few tens of thousands of cases we will not have the personnel to contain it. Not enough infectious disease wards, nurses and doctors would quit rather than face almost certain death, the disease would be similar to norovirus when it hits a hospital, maybe worse in influenza season as just a cough or drop of sweat is enough to get you. Quarantine and curfew would be the only way to stop the spread, but fat chance of that, people need to eat and the supermarkets use just in time to replenish so we could see bare shelves pretty rapidly.
