Xes Isn't Selling

Recommended Posts

http://www.theguardian.com/culture/2014/oct/05/sex-sell-decline-british-porn-xbiz-regulations-children

It would be hard to imagine a more tedious annual conference, with panel debates on “e-billing, best practices, stability and throughput” and much discussion of web analytics data and Ofcom regulation. Besides being so monotonously technical that by mid-afternoon at least two delegates are allowing themselves to listen with their eyes shut, their heads drooping forward, the atmosphere in the butterscotch-beige, windowless conference hall in the basements of an ugly Edgware Road Hilton is steeped in gloom.

The annual European adult industry trade summit (the word pornography isn’t mentioned on any of the promotional literature) comes at such a bleak time for the UK porn industry that after a few hours here you almost begin to feel sorry for these determined entrepreneurs, with their tireless attempts “to monetise content”.

“The industry is imploding,” the director of a pay-per-view adult television channel says. “If there was less free porn around, my business would be stronger.” Jerry Barnett, an industry lobbyist, and founder of Sex and Censorship, thinks the UK business “has shrunk by over 90%” in the past seven years.

No surprise free porn is killing the industry, the way some people are they are happy to get their kit off and do it for free in front of the camera!

Although I'm sure the people running the free sites are making some nice cash. I think Jerry needs to accept creative destruction has come to his business.

Why is there a porn industry anyway? Surely all possible sex scenes with all different types of girls have been made...perhaps decades ago. Its not like theres an important plot that can be innovative. Its just a busty blonde whose alive today doing the same scene a busty blonde was doing in the 70s or 80s

That is showbiz.

Maybe the 'professionals' need to ask the question why their 'product' is in part being undercut by the videos and photos made by amateur sexual exhibitionists on the web. Truth is that the porn movie industry largely ditched production values in the early 1980s when it decided to concentrate on churning out cheap repetitive, low quality VHS smut for the masses. Poor quality means the entry level for competition is low. Moreover, there is a veritable Everest sized porn back catalogue archived from the past 40 years against which they have to compete some of which is superior to the stuff being manufactured now. Why would people want to pay premium prices for new films when the existing alternatives are often better made. At least Hollywood realises that it needs to show some money and effort has been made to get the movie on the screen if it wants people to shell out to watch the latest blockbuster. It seems that UK porn barons like so many established British businesses think the punters should pay them just for churning out the same old tired crap they did 20 years ago. Doubtless they are hoping for some government legislation to protect their 'rent' stream just like every other UK group of UK VIs.

Where porn goes, others follow. Ironically enough for the Guardian, the same situation is likely to apply to the rest of the content industry. The free merchants like YouTube, blogs etc could well end up replacing many of the established providers. The Hollywood example is a good one - if you turn out crap, poorly produced films - people will eventually just pirate them or worse, not bother at all. I suspect this is why the super hero films are produced. It is not yet possible to do the same at home on your computer.

Or it could be a rare case of where the porn industry has failed to anticipate industry trends unlike other content producers.

Maybe for the same reason that people show the tendency to want to have sex with someone new even when they're partnered with someone with whom sex is available and, in most respects, anything from fine to great. Perhaps the desire for novelty in pornography is related to the effects of the spreading-your-oats-far-and-wide genetic programming.

"Low production values", "all been done before", "the public are making it for free" etc. Borrocks. It's piracy plain and simple. Tube sites and file lockers run by crooks happy to make their money on the backs of pirated content. Their money is made by advertising services that can't be pirated such as webcams and dating using other people's copyrighted content. These sort of site owners and the public will pirate anything. Old or new content, high or low quality. You can't compete with free.

I love the guardian commenters. One says its racist pornographers go to Eastern Europe to 'prey' on girls there to film.

Yup. Nothing do to with the fact it costs less there. If there was a decent supply of hot women willing to work for next to nothing in the US, i'm sure his patriotism and love of fellow americans would mean he'd turn his nose up at the opportunity.

Is there anywhere guardianista's don't see racism?

I guess its not their fault. They know they wont get free taxpayer money unless they can say they're going to solve global warming/end racism/bring the unicorn back etc.

Funny that if a girl gets her kit off or likes screwing in front of the camera, that someone must have 'prey-ed' on her.

Not saying it doesn't happen, but I guess there's plenty of other girls who just love sex and don't mind getting their kit off. God bless 'em!

I suppose fashions change and you have to move with the times. If you go back to the 70s then probably all the male participants have will mullets. Obscenity's all very well, but there are limits...

Edit. I remember once finding a website devoted to pornographic photos from the Victoria era. I had a brief look, and people were doing pretty much the same kind of thing they do nowadays. There was something distinctly disturbing about it though: "erotic" was about the last word that came to mind.

In radical feminism, I don't think women are 'allowed' to enjoy sex.

Not so much because they might find it enjoyable, but rather because in doing so, the man might also find it enjoyable. A pretty succinct detail as to why feminism isn't so much about empowering women, but rather denying men.

Perhaps you should read up a bit more on the industry

Some of the top free tube sites such as Pornhub and Youporn are owned by MindGeek which is also active in the production and distribution of porn via studios such as RealityKings

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MindGeek

http://www.therichest.com/expensive-lifestyle/money/money-in-pornography-one-of-the-most-misunderstood-industries/

Anyway Porn sites probably don 't host anymore pirated content than Youtube which pretty much established this business model but just happens to be owned by Google

The truth is that the world wide porn industry is still making lots of money it is just UK version that has gone down the crapper

This hardly surprising when UK porn has always been the video equivalent of the Soho clip joint promising much but delivering little. Its modus operandi relied on smut being restricted and hard to obtain in the UK. Once it had to compete with world wide competition its days of easy money were over. In fact I am amazed it has survived this long and did not fold up the moment people started posting free porn on the Usenet back in the 1990s.

For those interested in the IT side of the porn business the major Tube sites process phenomenal amounts of data daily.

That kind of computing grunt does not come cheap so this is being run and financed on an industrial scale

Also presumably nothing to do with the fact that the average Hungarian, Czech or Slovak girl is 10x more attractive than most women in the USA and UK....

I had to laugh at this comment. Typical confused Guardian reader!

The porn industry leaves me confused. On one hand it is an evil, mysoginistic abhorrent abomination, on the other it pays women a hell of a lot more than the men and who am I to tell willing women they can't ****** for money?

I think I might actually pay to see Guardian readers getting mindf**ked.
