cica
ABBA songs have amazing basslines. One of Us is probably the most obvious to hear. Most were played by a guy called Rutgar Gunnarsson. Masses of thought into how they work with the song. Amazing. The Oakenfold mix of Massive Attack's Unfinished Sympathy is very cool. It's the most common version with a bassline. McCartney on Penny Lane.

JustYield
Rio is bordering on funk bass... I wish I was good enough to play it.. Definitely one of my favourites, I don't care if Duran Duran aren't cool, they were tight! Taylor was influenced by Bernard Edwards of Chic, he of the iconic Good Times line, but found his own style. stormymonday_2011
And for the white boys John Entwistles bass line from My Generation takes a lot of beating The song has become a cliche but the bass is still ace Often Entwistle carries both the rhythm and the melody on Who songs Don't tell Pete Townshend but the Who are just not the same without Entwistle and Moon

Ologhai Jones
Rio is bordering on funk bass... I wish I was good enough to play it.. Just based upon the thread title and without opening it, the first bassline that came to my mind was the one in Rio. I imagine most people wouldn't credit Duran Duran with any incredible musicianship. The Rio bassline is so much more than I think anyone would expect from dim recollections of a fairly lightweight pop song from the '80s, that I think it's worth emphasising:
