How Often Do You Forget Passwords?

Recommended Posts

I guess most of you know what I'm on about - must be at least 500 characters long, contain a date, numbers, chinese language, egyptian hieroglyphics, alien markings etc.

Seems that some sites have these rules while others are free for all (or won't accept certain characters) meaning you can't just use an across the board password. I guess the same with username where it can be a username, or can be an email. Then there's all the applications at work that you need access too!

Ridiculous I tell thee!

Fine if they're of the fairly standard pattern - up to 8 characters, must contain at least one number and one letter.

Any that start doing their own "extra secure" variants - such as my trade body website which thinks a minimum 10 characters is a good idea - then I don't remember and don't even try to.

Never use the same password for more than one site or service. It may be no skin off your nose or HPC's if someone nicks your password here and posts as you, but if that same password accesses your bank account or your employer's VPN it's a different story.

I keep all my passwords (encrypted) on disc, with several copies on different computers. So all I need to remember is one passphrase for the PGP key to decrypt a password.

Your browser can of course remember passwords to some websites. But that's a security compromise, in that your browser is unprotected if your machine (or your data) fall into the wrong hands. Hence suitable for HPC, but not for $bank.

Then have one password used for all the unimportant stuff and unique ones for the sensitive things.
