Can't Make Ends Meet In London

Recommended Posts

Well --- this guy gets it.......

"....Monocle’s home could only ever be in London.

“I don’t think we could do this magazine in any other English-language hub but at same time I really believe that we need to stay on our game in this city,” he says, adding a warning. “The sense is that it’s great there are lots of cranes swinging around building sites and we are getting delirious numbers for housing but we have people who might be from Wellington or Vienna, super-talented, and they are by the standards of anywhere else in world making a very good living but they still can’t make ends meet. There is a problem if they are having to commute 90 minutes or living in a place without proper plumbing.”

I get the feeling the journo put that paragraph in without fully understanding (or reading) it?

Only the parasite professions: finance, law and accounting can afford to pay staff enough to live in London (hence making it worse for the rest of us).

Plus ca change...I remember talking to a Canadian accountant in around 1970 and he said he was going to work in London till his savings ran out and then go back to Canada.

London firms are reluctant to pay the demands from employees because of high London housing costs......why they can always get a London po box no and base themselves in a more favourable position.....win.win. ;)

In the apprentice they always do those aerial shots over Canary Warf, but isn't that office actually in Debden, Essex?
