A New Jersey woman who worked four jobs to make ends meet has died while napping in her car between shifts.

Maria Fernandes, 32, of Newark, died Monday from a mix of carbon monoxide and fumes from an overturned gas container that she kept in her 2001 Kia Sportage, the New York Daily News reports.

Investigators said Fernandes pulled into a lot off Route 1 and 9 in Elizabeth, New Jersey, for a nap early Monday morning.

She left the car running and, police said, the fumes from a spilled gas canister and the car's exhaust combined to kill her.

She was found dead around 3:51 p.m.

No foul play is suspected, according to Elizabeth Police Lt. Daniel Saulnier.

"This sounds like someone who tried desperately to work and make ends meet, and met with a tragic accident," Saulnier told NJ.com.

Fernandes, who was born in Portugal before emigrating to the U.S., was beloved by co-workers like Parth Patel, who worked with her at a Penn Station Dunkin' Donuts.

“She used to work like three shifts every day,” Patel told NJ.com. “Sometimes she wouldn’t sleep for five days.”

The American dream where you need 4 jobs to survive?

This is a sleeping in the car and carbon monoxide poisoning story - not one of dying from overwork.

Isn't it also a story of pollution, or faulty exhausts?

No doubt there will be a lot of hand-wringing from bleeding-heart liberal hipsters blogging away in Starbucks with their frothy coffee, muffin and iPhone all laid out before them...

Some people lose at the game of life. It's usually the innocents who believe they are to blame for their position and that more effort will solve everything. The hipsters should have taken her to one side, asked her to take a deep breath and maybe change her life. But who'd serve their coffee?

So true about the hipsters...

+1.

Well, the world is quite nice but Capitalism is evil.

We don't have capitalism. It's a myth that hard work will solve your problems. It might, but much depends on luck.

A sad story.

Not that it matters much but they don't seem to expand much on the four jobs or what relevance that has to the story. This lady's four jobs could have been for 30 hours per week and pretty low paid but it seems a tenuous link to her death.

I currently work one job, 37.5 hours a week and can also be found sometimes having a sleep in my car. Over the years I have worked other jobs, with different shift patterns, and again have taken many a sleep in the car. There is nothing to say that the same tragedy couldn't strike anybody.

She had a car. Therefore, more money than sense.

WFT? I know you're smarter than that. Outside of a few urban areas in North America it is impossible to work at all if you don't have a car. Access to one is not a luxury, it's an absolute necessity. Why do you think the primary line of attack against illegal immigrants in the US has been to attempt to deny them driving licenses?
