Uk Threat Level Raised To 'severe' After Iraq And Syria Conflicts

The UK's terror threat level is being raised from "substantial" to "severe" in response to conflicts in Iraq and Syria, Home Secretary Theresa May says.

The new alert level means an attack on the UK is "highly likely", although Mrs May said there was no intelligence to suggest an attack was "imminent".

It is the second highest of five possible UK threat levels.

PM David Cameron said at least 500 people had travelled from the UK "to fight in Syria and potentially Iraq".

He said Islamic State (IS) extremists - who are attempting to establish a "caliphate", or Islamic state, in the region - represented a "greater and deeper threat to our security than we have known before".

New legislation would also be brought in to make it easier to take passports away from people travelling abroad to join the conflict, Mr Cameron said.

National Policing Lead for Counter-Terrorism Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley said security and protection measures were being increased from Friday.

Perhaps Dave if you hadn't fecked up and not encouraged these lunatics in the first place we'd all might be a bit safer.

Cameron's cabinet briefing, dateline: just after morning coffee:

I say lads, let's all try to persuade the British public to support our bombing Assad and help these jolly ISIS freedom fighters to get rid of a terrible tyrant!

Ooops......

Oh YEAH!

Britain and France are prepared to arm Syrian rebels unless the European Union lifts a blanket arms embargo on Syria, David Cameron will tell a Brussels summit today.

The Prime Minister will tell other EU leaders that he and Francois Hollande, the French President, can no longer stand by as the Syrian regime, armed by Russia and Iran, kills civilians and seeks to crush rebels.

“There is a perversity about an arms embargo. It doesn’t stop those aiding Assad,” a Number 10 source said. “It does stop EU countries and others helping those against whom Assad is waging a brutal and terrorising war.”

The Prime Minister and Mr Hollande will interrupt the scheduled agenda at the European Council summit in Brussels to demand EU-wide action within weeks.

Mr Cameron will clash with Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, who fears that arming Syrian rebels will cause the conflict to spill-over into the wider region and that weapons could end up in the hands of extremist Islamist groups.

this from 15/03/13 so they have discussed this likely outcome for 17 months...and now its a shock and surprise...

Oh b*gger it. Just bomb the b&stards

There's no point spending all this money on guns if you're not going to use them.

Though I am 100% behind airstrikes on ISIS; murdering scum that they are. Whoever is financing them.

that has to be done in a less obvious way.go in all guns blazing and you will have 20-30 years of enforced peace, while alienating the rest of the region to turn even the moderates hostile.

you'll have a much bigger problem then.

you have 2 options really.

1) go completely overboard and level the entire region(and I mean level)..to the extent of those like gadaffi, arafat and the algerian president from back in the 50's who stated outbreeding was one method of attack, find out they have less than 10% of the population they had 24 hours ago-,followed up by systematic despatch of those already on our shores, and then close the borders

2) allow them to have their "30 years war" and settle their sectarian disputes in their own way, give a bit of logistical help to the islamic "reformation" who want rid of absolute rule by clerics and monarchs, much like we did 600 years ago.

...not a pretty scenario but probably the better of the two options.

You could get all the leaders in one place next week. Only there's an air restriction zone around Cardiff and Newport.

St Athan in the Vale of Glamorgan - about seven miles west of Cardiff city centre.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MOD_St_Athan

..

The only squadrons to operate out of St Athan on a regular basis are the University of Wales Air Squadron (one of fourteen RAF University Air Squadrons), flying Grob Tutors and No 634 Volunteer Gliding Squadron using Vigilant T.1s. 2300 Squadron of the Air Training Corps is also located on the Station.

I'm sure the gliders will make all the difference! :P:lol:
