Reck B
big news breaking. Have read a couple of his books, seems like an OK politician if they exist. Edited August 28, 2014 by Reck B

1929crash
And he's going to resign and stand in a by-election. Cool.
EUBanana
Douglas Carswell is great, proper libertarian Tory. He's not totally without blemish (...expenses) though. I dearly hope he is re-elected however, it's an enormous risk, and he's one of the few MPs I actually agree with. Surprised he's doing it, a little worried. But he's got some political principles at least.
Bruce Banner
But until then he is the UKIP MP for Clacton. UKIP have their first MP.
SpewLabour
But until then he is the UKIP MP for Clacton. UKIP have their first MP. As much as I support UKIP, even I can't honestly agree with that. Of course, if he gets elected, then it's trebles all round.

He's doing the decent thing by resigning and forcing a by-election, he could have just changed party and carried on.

1929crash
I totally agree. He's actually showing some principle. Big majority to overturn, though But he's probably thinking of how well UKIP performed in the Euro-elections last May.
Killer Bunny
A principled politician? Whatever next!!! (spluttering into G&T - well it's over the yard arm somewhere in the World...) Best thing DC has ever done - and I don't mean the PM! Though why a capitalist would join a Socialist party God knows. Cue uproar.

Last guy to talk disparagingly about banks in UKIP was Godfrey Bloom...look what happened to him. Carswell is probably more learned on PC etiquette however. billybong
As there's only a few months to go it's just possible that his seat will only be contested at the 2015 general election. http:// www.parliament.uk/about/how/elections-and-voting/by-elections/ http:// en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UK_Parliamentary_by-elections Edited August 28, 2014 by billybong

Bruce Banner
The Conservatives are worried........"There may well be a Labour government if people vote for UKIP", said Tory MP Mark Pritchard on BBC News a few minutes ago. I, for one, will take that chance.
Killer Bunny
@paddypower Clacton By Election 4/6, UKIP 11/10 Conservatives, 25/1 Labour, 100/1 Liberal Democrat
Executive Sadman
There is of course the more cynical viewpoint that Carswell knows Farage said he will step down if they don't get any MPs, giving a high profile figure like Carswell a good chance of leadership/control of UKIP. Of course, this means he wouldn't be an MP, but rather get the far more lucrative job of being an MEP.

billybong
Carswell says: "The problem is that many of those at the top of the Conservative Party are simply not on our side. They aren't serious about the change that Britain so desperately needs. "Of course they talk the talk before elections. They say what they feel they must say to get our support when they want our support, but on so many issues - on modernising our politics, on the recall of MPs, on controlling our borders on less government, on bank reform, on cutting public debt, on an EU referendum - they never actually make it happen." (It makes a change from Cable says and Boulger says). It would have been great if he'd also commented on the reckless policy of crazy manipulated house prices but it's a start.
