Landlord fined for renting room that could only be entered on all fours
Tenants would need to be less than 2 feet 4 inches tall to walk to the Hendon room’s door
Many people crawl into bed at the end of a long day but tenants in a north London house were forced to crawl on all fours to access their rented room.

fine is pitiful considering what he was making on the rent.

It does all seem rather pointless, the fine is less than the rent charged and they still retain the property. Where's the disincentive here to not behave in such a manner?

These slumlords need to be given a taste of their own medicine and be shat on from a great height, at the very least they should be registered and minimum standards enforced.

“Barnet council is keen to work with landlords and help them to provide safe accommodation. However, those who exploit tenants for financial gain will not be tolerated and the appropriate action will be taken.”

Barnet council should rather provide enough council owned accommodation (council housing) so that situations like this one would never arise as there would be enough decent and fairly priced accommodation for everybody.

As long as housing supply is severely restricted and demand is high such cases will inevitably happen.

But I guess Barnet council would be happier for the tenant to live on the streets than in this rabbit hole...

The second sentence of the quoted statement is beyond stupid as all landlords "exploit tenants for financial gain", that's the whole point of being a landlord...

So at what point is accommodation closed down rather than just given a fine.

When there are bunk beds hanging from the ceiling above the stairs? - or do they justify any standards by "there's a shortage of housing"?

Do the people living there think that London is the greatest city in the world or just an overrated *********.

Exactly, how this can be allowed to continue is beyond me, the crash will come and people like him will finally lose.

£420 a month!!!!!!(and someone stupid/desparate enough to rent it too)...the epitomy of insanity.

..a fool and their money...

I think there probably are sufficient clauses in BTL/HMO morgage rules covering emergency/fire accessibility to have it closed down.

..if they are properly enforced.

(in which case the FULL amount of rent taken from the room while unsafe plus legal costs should be the MINIMUM penalty)
