Mexican billionaire tycoon, Carlos Slim, has called for the introduction of a three-day working week, offset by longer hours and a later retirement, as a way to improve people’s quality of life and create a more productive labour force.

Slim made the comments when speaking to a business conference in Paraguay, suggesting that the workforce could be spread over a full week, with employees working up to 10 or 11 hours a day.

“With three work days a week, we would have more time to relax; for quality of life,” the Financial Times reports Slim saying.

The business conference, Growing Together – States and Enterprises, was held in Asuncion and was attended by business and political leaders from across Latin America.

“Having four days [off] would be very important to generate new entertainment activities and other ways of being occupied,” Slim said. He said current retirement ages come from a time of lower life expectancies, and should rise to 70 or 75.

And it would allow you to win and hoard more tokens.

Although I wonder if he would accept a 3 day week?

wouldn't that be lovely!!

in truth, with my previous job we did something similar(albeit for different reasons, at the time we had a limited amount of equipment and a very large job, so had to organise a workable "shift" pattern), so we agreed "core hours" from mon-thurs to cover 6am-11pm (9hrs with lunch, and 30 min overlap),and then 4 hour flexi on friday.

we did discuss 10hrs from either mon-thurs/tues-fri but that idea wasn't popular for some reason.

I would have thought the extra day at home would have been a good idea, and theoretically more efficient for folks commuting, but it didn't go down that way.

it does work though.

I've worked a 3 day week for the past 5 years. Once you're earning at a reasonable level it makes sense. i offset the nominal loss easily in having time to live and not wasting money on convenience food and other rubbish I don't need. would never go vavk, even if they quadrupled my original full time salary.

wouldnt work 11 hrs per day though. I'll stick with the 7.5 thanks carlos.

Give people 4 days off work and they will use their mobile phones more. Carlos didn't get to be so wealthy for nothing. Next it might be a suggestion that it's against our human rights not to be allowed to make personal phone calls in work time.

Currently, Slim’s América Móvil controls 70% of the mobile phone market in Mexico and 80% of landlines

So why didn't people see it as a good thing?

Isn't he in effect just trying to align "Latin America" with countries like the UK with its zero hour/temporary contracts and part wage/part tax credits/part benefits economy.

Maybe if it takes on he's expecting they'll be importing cheap labour to make up the remainder of the days in a working week etc - then he might also be thinking of the landlords/land prices etc etc etc. Has he got a Latin American property portfolio.

From wikipedia

Slim has extensive holdings in a considerable number of Mexican companies through his comglomerate, Grupo Carso, SA de CV, have amassed interests in the fields of communications, real estate, airlines, media, technology, retailing, and finance. Presently, Slim is the chairman and chief executive of telecommunications companies Telmex and America Movil.

For sure and at the very least the retailing and media parts would benefit from the spare hours workers might have available to shop and pay for media products - as well as being more free to use their phones.
