Think this is Hawaii? It's actually Hartlepool: Hottest night for 24 years predicted as temperatures soar to a sleep-wrecking 73F

I guess 24 is sleep wrecking when you're used to a more temperate -15. :)

Edit to say: since when did the sun set in the East!

There's always one doing that clever "thinking" thing.

Scrolling down through the photos this one caught my eye. Children sitting in the shade after their bus had broken down and every single one with their face obscured. We laugh at the Victorians with their prudery and covering of table legs (ok, I belive that to be apocryphal) but this looks far more mental. People will laugh at the early 21st century pictures where we blotted out children's faces because of the paedophile-mania raging at the time.

I came across an interesting Latin phrase from a 15th century Church publication yesterday.

Haeresis est maximus opera maleficarum non credere.

To disbelieve in witchcraft is the greatest of heresies.

That really is quite nuts. The UK is very ill at the moment - hopefully it will pass.

Not to mention indulging in lots of self-delusion.

Look at what they all say about Alan Turing - and that prime ministerial pardon. Sure, he was a genius who deserved much better than to be driven to suicide. But he was a man in his late 30s having sexual relations with an under-age boy: surely he'd have fared worse today than in his own time!

Same applies to Oscar Wilde - though in his case his downfall was hubristically flaunting it and picking a fight with a man who was powerful as well as unpleasant. I wonder if we were ever really so intolerant of homosexuality between consenting adults in private, or whether prosecutions for "gross indecency" were just a prequel to today's witch-hunt?

How things have changed since Alcibiades harangued Socrates for NOT having - in today's terms - abused him!

No permission from parents to use the photo of the kids - hence obscuring of their identity. Probably would be a nightmare getting that many releases in time for publication so they took the easy option.

Doesn't just apply to kids btw. If an adult is clearly identifiable, unless a massive crowd, you should get a signed release from them too.

Hence the two adults haven't been obscured. They would have been able to give permission on the spot.

Truly is a nightmare for photographers and publishers - but understandable from the point of view of individual rights to privacy etc.

Permission - what has this country become :(

Thought that the whole "permission" thing was only if a particular individual was the main focus of a photo, which obviously isn't the case for a group.

Yep, the country has gone crazy.

From Wikipedia:

Photography of certain subject matter is restricted in the United Kingdom. In particular, the Protection of Children Act 1978 restricts making or possessing pornography of under-18s, or what looks like pornography of under-18s. However, the taking of photographs of children in public spaces is not illegal.

Model release

No release is required for publication, as news, of a photo taken of an identifiable person when the person is in a public place. In general, no release is required for publication of a photo taken of an identifiable person when the person is in a public space unless the use is for trade or direct commercial use, which is defined as promoting a product, service, or idea.[1] Publication of a photo of an identifiable person, even if taken when the person is in a public place, for commercial use, without a model release signed by that person, can result in civil liability for whoever publishes the photograph.[2]

Something a lot of tabloids do on occasion is blank out faces when they just want to make someone look vaguely "guilty"

In this case I just think - why is a picture of a bunch of school children sitting at the side of a road in any way news?

Maybe the news is that their faces were blanked out by an alien force as in a recent Dr Who story? :o
