Amazing turnout at stage 1. I quite fancy visiting Yorkshire.

We were in Hawes - sister and BIL live there, and the whole shebang was whizzing past the end of their garden! Hawes was utterly heaving, and the decorations etc. were amazing - stacks of yellow bikes everywhere, all the flowers in TDF colours, fantastic atmosphere, and best of all, the weather was kind!

Of course some of the merchandise was a ripoff - I ended up paying £17 a pop for TDF baseball caps for nephew's little kids, but sod it, we don't see them very often...

Wish I knew how to upload photos on iPad. There was an old tractor in the High St filled with red and white flowers, and a signpost pointing to Paris one way, Buttertubs the other! Mr B and BIL walked up to Buttertubs to watch from there - even more heaving than the town.

Found out that Buttertubs is so called because there is a deep pothole with water streaming in, and when people came from Swaledale to sell their butter at the market, they would leave any unsold there to keep cool for next week, rather than lugging it home.

I'd always assumed it was because they reminded someone of a churn or something like that, you learn something new...

And if it was endless mile upon mile of that instead of it all being fairly close to large cities then you'd be right. That sort of scene should be typical of 95% of the country (well, ignoring the facts of geography that it isn't all hilly) instead of just National Parks.

The "nimby nonsense" as you so crudely put it is "Don't see this wonderful landscape and build shit all over it please."

Watching the Yorkshire stages looked a lot like watching some of the French stages passing through small villages and narrow lanes that you get over there.

It's a shame that Team Sky couldn't see the imperative in accommodating both Froome and Wiggins in the same Tour line up, now their prospects for retaining the title are in tatters. Doubtless there would be tensions but it seemed crazy to omit Wiggins.

It's not like a game of football when you can bring on a sub when a player gets injured. A cycling team has to work together for the benefit of one rider, the leader who is considered to have the best chance of winning whatever classification they are aiming for. If Wiggins had been on the team he'd hardly of been protecting/leading out Froome, he would of effectively been riding for himself with no benefit to the team goal, IMO.

The 'wonderful landscape' is already littered with villages often build a couple of centuries ago before green belt and national parks existed.

It's somehow perfectly acceptable to live in a stone cottage built in the 18th century but not at all acceptable to build a few new ones today. As for the 'large cities' where on earth do you imagine they were built if not on the 'wonderful landscape'?

Hence Nimby nonsense is a perfect description of it.

Will be interesting to see where Sky are in a year. If Porte manages to hold onto a podium position, with a weakened team, what's the odds on him possibly getting a ride as team leader elsewhere? If Thomas is instrumental in Porte's performance, might he be tempted to move on too?

Sky had an embarrassment of riches in cycling talent a couple of seasons ago, and it seems that now things could be pretty different in le Tour 2015. Speculation of course.

If Porte does well this year, I can't imagine him wanting to be hemmed in next year by Froome, and may jump ship as Cavendish did. He certainly didn't seem at all bothered when Froome went out.

And now no Contador! I bet Nibali can't believe it. But who knows we could have a surprise winner this year.

Indeed, it's very interesting now, positions in the top 10 are very precarious, only Nibali has any degree of safety. There are some brutal stages remaining. Stages 16, 17 and 18 on consecutive days make my legs feel like jelly just looking at the routes.

yes, there are some undulating stretches on those days aren't there!!??

Heads up for La Vuelta - tour of Spain - ITV4 usually 7.00pm.

Flat stages mostly out of the way now and no crashes so all favourites still there - 12 mountain stages to come!

To increase the torture they hold it in August! - temps are high 30's C, although they move up North soon.

Line up is better even than the Tour de France - Froome, Quintana, Uran and other Columbian climbers, Valverde, Rodriguez, Aru , Dan Martin, Tony Martin, Mathews, Gilbert, Betancur, Pinot, Barguel etc. etc. Contador is even there, despite breaking his leg in June.
