Flexible Working Rights Extended To All

Every employee now has the right to request flexible working hours after the government extended the right previously reserved for carers and those looking after children.

As part of the right, employees can expect their request to be considered "in a reasonable manner" by employers.

The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills said 20 million people now had the right to ask to work flexibly.

Unions and employment groups welcomed the move.

The change in the law, which affects everyone with more than six months' service, comes less than a week after the government said it would ban employers from stopping staff with zero-hours contracts - under which employees' hours are not guaranteed - seeking extra work elsewhere.

Does flexible working increase or decrease productivity? Anyone on here own a business that's dreading this move?

i use to work for a small company who created flexitime for chap who had 5 kids and another lady. It got really silly. the people who did not ask or want flexitime ended up losing half an hour dinner break which caused bad feeling. These people who went out of the office ended getting the lunch for people who wanted to claim half an hour back flextime. This went on for a few months and in the ended i just sat in office every day and played there game like they did and ended up with an entire week worth of flexitime holiday which was apparently not what i was meant to do.

It caused so much bad feeling i eventually left for another job followed by 2 other employees. 2 years or so later they went bust.

Im not against the idea but boss of the company has to be very carefully when doing this. In the small 10 person company i worked for upsetting three members of staff was not a very good idea.

Since any request for flexible working can be rejected for 'business reasons' it is pretty much a token gesture.

Anyway the most common type of 'flexible work' I see is staff working unpaid overtime and zero hours contracts.

The flexibility only goes one way for many employers

Pointless meddling which will (like much of the employment regs) punish small businesses whose compliance costs are proportionally higher.

Employment regulation == regulatory capture in favour of corporates.

Here's something I didn't know till I saw it on the BBC report this morning. If you ask for flexible hours, it is then changed on the job contract and you cannot ask to go back to your original hours/arrangement for ONE year. And even then, your employer presumably say no.

In 2005 I asked my boss for a flexible working pattern and they offered me a contract where I get 8/12 of my salary paid monthly over the entire 12 months. in return I get 4 months holiday effectively unpaid and 1 months paid holiday.

I am still on this contract and it works for me, 7 months working then 5 months off to spend with my wife and daughter in Thailand.

Can't fault it and I am sure there are many other industries and employees that can benefit from this type of contract.

Pointless legistation.

Employers will just say NO!

Not at all, it will flush out the workshy who are just in it to earn a crust to enjoy their free time; they can then be fired in the next round of redundancies.

That word "Reasonable" again. Get out of jail free card no dobt

There are a lot of jobs were you cannot possiblily allow someone to work flexible hours without having to employing someone else, that would be costly.

As a small business owner its a worry amounts all the other regulatory worries. I seem to spend too much time talking to our solicitors to avoid being taken to court by our employees on redundancy, restructures etc This is just another things that our employees can use against the small employer and I can see the "my flexible working was rejected due to sex/age/race discrimination" card being played at some point

Flexible hours is good, but even better is telecommute. That could empty The City, refill vacant homes up north and smooth out house price bubbles somewhat. It will also reduce train demand and fares. There is still a culture of nanny here. Bosses have to see you.

This is bound to happen. I will laugh when somebody will then talk about the desperate need for HS2

I do, the majority of my staff work from home, but its the process of asking and then rejecting that will cause problems and what flexible actually means.
