Britain is in the grip of an invisible housing squeeze with millions of people living in homes that are too small for them, according to new research which reveals that more than half of all dwellings are failing to meet minimum modern standards on size.

The poorest households are being hit hardest, with estimates suggesting that four-fifths of those affected by the Coalition’s “bedroom tax” are already forced to contend with a shortage of space, the Cambridge University study found.

The findings will put pressure on the Government, which announced it was to develop a national space standard – although this will only be enforced where it does not impinge on development. Critics argue that the UK already has the smallest properties in Europe following the end of national guidelines in 1980. But soaring land and property prices and a shortage of new homes are fuelling overcrowding, which causes health problems including depression, insomnia and asthma.

These houses aren't for living in!

They are speculative instruments to be view in awe by the unwashed masses that can't afford to buy them, but are forced to rent them so they don't live in the local sewer.

When you can't get any more money out of people for a normal sized house....built flats.

When you can't get any more money out of people for a normal sized flat....built smaller flats.

When you can't get any more money out of people for a small sized flat....put people in shared houses

what next.....

When you can't get any more money out of people in shared houses....put people in shared rooms.

Welcome to thatchers Britain.

Simon Jenkins said on Question Time a few weeks ago that people in cities should rent out their spare rooms in order to increase population density in the cities so that those in the countryside with views over fields could feel safe from them being developed. People are being squeezed not only financially but physically, it’s not going to end well…

Not only are they too small, the 'detached' houses on the new estates are often FAR too close together.

I drove past a new estate in Bude over the weekend and there must have been a gap of no more than 1 metre between 'detached' houses.

I guess this is a symptom of having to rinse every £ profit available because land prices are too high.

Bang on the money. Land prices are far too high and builders are far too greedy. I just can't see what will change attitudes in the UK towards house prices and draconian planning laws at the moment?

Welcome to thatchers Britain.

She is dead and lost power in 1990. TBH I don't think she would have made things better but the mess is more Blair/Brown/Cameroon (mostly Brown IHMO) than her.
