Magistrate Court Fines 'may Rise 300%' Under New Plans

Maximum fines imposed by magistrates are set to rise dramatically under new proposals for England and Wales.

The top offence level, which includes motorway speeding, could increase from £2,500 to £10,000.

Other affected cases could include speeding, driving without insurance or the sale of alcohol to a child.

Justice Minister Jeremy Wright said financial penalties "set at the right level" were an effective punishment for offenders.

"Magistrates are the cornerstone of our justice system and these changes will provide them with greater powers to deal with the day-to-day offences that impact their local communities," he added.

His proposals could also see magistrates having unlimited fine powers for offences where there is currently a maximum of £5,000 or more.

The new tax grab? £10k for speeding???

I wonder how many people currently driving without insurance would be able to pay a £10k fine, it would seem that those who can afford the fine would actually have insurance.

break an economy with criminal ponzi banking activities, money laundering or simple bed and breakfasting, and a fine now is just a tiny percentage of the cost of doing business in this way.

£10k is nothing for speeding, go to Switzerland & the maximum is 18 months pay.....

£650,000 is the highest to date http://www.theguardian.com/world/2010/aug/12/record-speeding-fine-switzerland

Only a few months ago they were talking of making it a civil offence ... Say one thing do another.

Just shows how fearful the LIBLABCON are about people not funding their mouthpiece.

Would the fines have any connection with what people earn?

Can only wealthy people afford to not have a TV license and speed on the motorway?

How are people going to pay 300% increases in fines?

Already, most can't afford a solicitor to represent them at £250 + vat an hour!

Two grand fine for not wearing a crash helmet, something that should not be compulsory anyway!

IIRC if you are a Sikh you are exempt from wearing one. Could be some interesting test cases!

No need to.

A TV license is only necessary for watching LIVE broadcast.

... save yourself some money, don't fund the paedo-friendly BBC and go LLF (legally license free). The only thing you have to worry about is the TV license goons hassling you and trying to fit you up.

Have a look at the TV license resistance forum for lots of interesting information.

Why would a fine be a deterrant to those that have no money or those that have plenty to spare.....all it means both the wealthy and the poor can and will continue to speed,.......why not a two month driving ban? and the consequences that go with that if broken....but no it is the money they want, it may make the normal law abiding think twice but not the ones with too much or nothing at all...... ;)
