Grand Designs - Love That Show

Recommended Posts

Was watching grand designs tonight, guy built a huge 4 bed wooden kit house from Finland that cost 120k.

If only land didn't need permission it would be so easy to have a great lifestyle.

Sigh

I'd considered this option whilst looking to buy a few years ago.Its hard to get a mortgage on plus a building regs compliant flat pack home would not come in much cheaper than a bricks and mortar one once you factor in the cost of land and labour.

Provided you personally project manage and source all materials, a standard 2 storey new build should not cost more than £700 per square metre + site clearance/groundworks in most parts of the country.

I recently project managed and sourced materials for an extension the size of a 2 storey new build (90sqm). Your £700/sqm + groundworks is spot on (South Cambridgeshire).

Have to say last week the shipping container house was fantastic, one of my faves. However this week the inward facing cow shed with opaque walls was ghastly. I suspected it might be not to my taste early on when first seeing the heavily tattooed vivien westwood clone whose house it would become.

I suspect it will be on the market in the not-too-distant future.

Not very attractive is it...they have had all the fun designing this thing, got bored with it and expect someone else to play with their second hand toy. No thanks.
