So do you dislike IDS for being a hypocrite, or a sponger?

You make it sound like you'd be just fine with it if he kept schtum about others...

No I hate him for both.

Rich people shouldn't need subsidies. The fact that he is demonizing the poor makes things worse.

I would be quite happy for job seekers to be left alone to get on with finding a job, I don't think any of the governments efforts to "help" are of any use. We could save a whole lot of money by not trying.

The unemployed as stated before are a minute fraction of the benefit spend. Even more so when you realise that housing benefit doesn't really benefit the unemployed but their landlords.

Housing benefit is the problem not the solution. If anything this should make them even more anti benefits.

Possibly, but in my area nearly 50% of the housing benefit claimants are over 65 and retired (almost double the national average of 25% retirees on HB).

Folk could probably stomach kids suffering whilst things adjusted, but would almost certainly have an issue if we stopped paying the elderly's rents for them.

A state house building program of specialist housing for all our grey-haired benefit "scroungers' first would be more logical than simply letting them suffer (as they couldn't pay their rents themselves anyway even if the market rate did drop).
