Go on - buy the winkiemobile! I would say I agree with RXE but as my knowledge is second hand I'm more echoing it. Diesels cost more in maintenance because of turbo, front tyres wearing quicker from the heavy and torquey engine but the base engine is a lot sturdier than a petrol (because in has to be) and combined with diesel being a natural lubricant the engine will go on much longer. You need to do a decent mileage to have the fuel saving pay for the extra maintenance over a simple petrol engine, I save £1,700 pa on my high mileage (c. 25k) so this easily pays for the extra maintenance.
